PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, National Safe Boating Week occurs May 20 – May 26, 2023. The U.S. Coast
Guard and its federal, state, and local safe boating partners encourage all boaters to explore and
enjoy the America’s beautiful waters responsibly; and
WHEREAS, safe boating begins with preparation. The Coast Guard estimates that human
error accounts for most boating accidents and that life jackets could prevent nearly 83% of boating
fatalities; and
WHEREAS, we promote safe boating through practicing basic boating safety procedures
like filing a float plan, being a responsible boater, wearing a life jacket, following navigation rules,
never boating under the influence, and using an engine cut-off switch; and
WHEREAS, we encourage boaters and paddlers to share their passion for responsible
boating by showing the community that wearing a life jacket is rewarding, expected and easy – it’s
the norm.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSH SCHROEDER, MAYOR OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS,
do hereby support the goals of the Safe Boating Campaign and proclaim
May 20 – 26, 2023 as National Safe Boating Week
and the start of the year-round effort to promote safe boating
