2015-10-15
MINUTES - DRAFT
Members present: Kelly Thyssen (Chairperson), Jack Garey (Vice-Chairperson), Anna Eby
(Council woman), Susanne Paclebar, Michael Simpson (Secretary), and Lyle Warden DVM
Staff present: Jackie Carey and Shawn Gunnin
Absent: Andrea Brown
Meeting called to order at 6:03 pm by Kelly Thyssen.
1. Citizen’s comments – none
2. Motion to approve minutes of Sept 17 meeting made by Mike Simpson, seconded by
Kelly Thyssen, passed by unanimous vote.
3. Presentation of animal services statistical and analytical report for September 2015 and
FY2014/2015 total by Jacky Carey. The Animal Shelter achieved No Kill status for the
EVERY MONTH, CATS AND DOGS for FY2014/2015 (Oct 2014- Sep 2015). This is a
MAJOR ACHEIVEMENT for any animal shelter, especially a public intake animal shelter.
This could not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of Shelter staff,
volunteers, foster homes, rescue groups, PetsMart, and Austin Pets Alive coordination,
cooperation, and commitment. Statistical Summary attached to these minutes for official
records. Staff will contact City public relations Keith Hiutchenson to issue a public
announcement and other public media for public awareness of this achievement.
4. Discussion regarding the shelter Master Plan updated by Anna Eby
The Animal Shelter Master Plan has been funded and is out bid at the time of this
meeting. Three levels of scope were identified and bidders are invited to bid one, two, or
all three scope segments. The results will be compared to available funding to determine
bid award most beneficial to the City of Georgetown.
5. Discussion about low cost vaccination clinics provided by animal shelter.
Attached is the Georgetown Animal Shelter Annual Vaccine Clinic Report Summary.
Five (5) clinics were conducted, servicing 391 animals with vaccinations and microchip if
requested. This is considered a great success, surpassing prior years result doubling
animals vaccinated through this program. While this is targeted as a low cost vaccination
program, through donation of veterinary services and volunteers to organize the
services, the program actually ran a small profit.
6. Discussion regarding the creation of collateral for introduction of the City of Georgetown
Animal Shelter to city staff and the public lead by Michael Simpson. Staff will contact city
staff videographer for help in creating a video of the feature, benefits, and needs (current
and future) of the animal shelter in context of the Pet Friendly City of Georgetown.
Complementary services include the network of dog parks, public park area, and public
trails as well as the public minded Animal Services and public safety ordinances. The
board expressed a desire to have this available for a February or March Council
Workshop.
7. Motion to adjourn made by Kelly Thyssen, second by Lyle Warden, passed by
unanimous vote.
Meeting adjourned 6:58 pm
