JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Senior Librarian – Children’s Services Effective Date: 10/01/2012

SUMMARY: Oversees, manages and directs the activities and assigned staff of the Children’s Services Department of
the Library.

subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Recommends for hire, supervises, and develops staff through review of performance data, conferences,
counseling, training and evaluating of performance.
Plans, coordinates, publicizes and presents library programs and activities for children throughout the year.
Maintains statistical records of programs and attendance.
Selects children’s material for purchase, taking into consideration the needs and likes of the community.
Assists children and parents in selecting and locating materials; supervises, trains, and monitors Internet and
electronic resources.
Develops budget and monitors expenditures.
Works with schools, daycares and other non-profit organizations to encourage of use of library support and
materials.
Assists children’s circulation desk and shelving materials.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, training and Experience Guidelines
Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university with major coursework in Library
and Information Science. Three years of full-time progressively responsible experience in as a professional librarian. Two
years of the required experience must have been in a lead of supervisory capacity. OR Any equivalent combination of
education and/or experience equivalent to an MLS that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge of:
Library classification and reference systems.
Methods, policies, practices, principles, and procedures of professional library work.
Children’s literature.
City policies and procedures.
Emerging library technologies.
Library information technology.
Federal, state, and City rules and procedures.
Supervisory, management, and leadership principles and practices.
Budget developing and financial procedure and practice.
Library strategic planning.
Process of selection/acquisition/cataloging/processing of library materials and skill in overseeing the process.

Skill in:
Designing, directing, coordinating, planning and administering a city library program.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Using computers and related equipment, hardware and software.
Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
Planning and implementing departmental procedures and objectives.
Effectively supervising and delegating duties to assigned staff.
Resolving customer complaints and concerns.
Evaluating, interpreting, and analyzing day-to-day operations; formulating effective, pro-active solutions to
identified problems.
Staying informed to be able to support the developmental age and interests of the children’s population.
Interacting with people of all ages
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Valid Class C Texas driver’s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision,
hearing, talking, use of foot controls.
