HomeMy WebLinkAboutAnimal Shelter TechnicianPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Animal Shelter Technician Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-Exempt Revision Date: 07/08/2014 SUMMARY: Assists in operation and maintenance of animal shelter. Provides animal care and customer service. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Receives, handles and kennels animals  Cleans, disinfects, and maintains animal holding facility grounds and equipment in accordance with state regulations.  Cleans and disinfects animal cages, litter boxes, and pens.  Feeds, waters, bathes, dips, and exercise animals, medicates, if necessary.  Assist visitors with adoptions/impounds/reclaims of animals/selling City licenses.  Maintains relevant written records; enter/retrieve information on computer.  Monitors physical condition of animals and performs health care as directed by veterinarian.  Manages cage and kennel space by performing daily inventory of animals.  Handles animals extensively, moving them within the shelter and restraining them for examinations/testing/evaluations.  May provide oversight and direction to community service workers and volunteers.  May assist in the euthanasia of animals.  Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines High School diploma or equivalent. Six months of full-time experience working with animals. OR Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of:  Animal behavior.  Disease management and safety protocols.  Laws and regulations governing the licensing, quarantine, and impounding of animals.  Zoonotic diseases communicable from pets to humans.  Animal behavior.  Euthanasia procedures.  Calculating animal medication dosages based on weight.  City policies and procedures.  Skill in:  Mixing cleaning solutions according to stated directions.  Quickly recognizing and analyzing unusual behavior in animals.  Interpreting policies and procedures regarding the handling and care of animals.  Understanding and following oral and written instructions.  Reading and comprehending manuals, journals, office memos, warning labels, road signs, instructions. Page 2 of 2  Analyzing data.  Utilizing a tranquilizer gun.  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.  Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.  Administering medications to animals, drawing blood and performing other laboratory related work LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s license Euthanasia Certification or must obtain within six months or one year of employment.. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Exposure to extreme temperature when outdoors; constant noise from barking dogs at the shelter, physical risk from wild or fractious animals, occasional threats from hostile customers; exposure to cleaning chemicals; risk of contracting zoonotic disease (including rabies).
