HomeMy WebLinkAboutAnimal Control SupervisorPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Animal Control Supervisor Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-exempt Revision Date: 07/08/2014 SUMMARY: Under general supervision, participates in and supervise the activities of the Animal Control staff ensuring proper caring out of functions related to rabies control, dangerous or vicious animal investigations and animal impoundment, education and prevention services. Enforces City Code relating to Animals and resolves animal nuisances. Incumbents in this classification are required to be on-call on a rotating schedule. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Recommends for hire, supervises, and develops staff through review of performance data, conferences, counseling, training and evaluating of performance.  Oversees animal control processes, enforcement and investigations.  Responds to and resolves customer complaints in the following areas: animal nuisance, city code violations, animal welfare, rabies control and dangerous animals.  Patrols the city to identify and eliminate animal nuisances.  Manages employee scheduling to ensure that business needs are being met.  Investigate animal bites and potential rabies exposures  Impounds and transports stray and other animals, lifting animals up to 100 lbs.  Monitors cases insuring that appropriate action is taken and follow ups are completed in timely manner.  Assists ACO’s with case investigations and legal procedures.  Performs general customer service at the Animal Shelter including, but not limited to, counseling pet’s owners and prospective adopters, and intake of animals and selling licenses.  Euthanizes animals when necessary using humane methods.  Responds to observed or reported emergency situations and ordinance violations as well as after-hours emergency calls at the request of citizens and the Georgetown Police Department  Assists in various aspects of community outreach, providing animal related training, information on Animal Services programs and activities to public and private organizations and the general public.  Writes reports and records data on appropriate log/forms; maintains up-to-date records and files.  Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines High School diploma or equivalent Three years of full-time work experience as an Animal Control Officer. One year of the required experience must have been in a field related to animal control and one years of the required experience must have included customer service/relations. One year of experience must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity. OR Any equivalent combination of experience, training, and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of:  Federal, state and local laws pertaining to the care, treatment, handling and impoundment of animals.  Animal services and related programs.  Supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.  Animal and rabies control laws and ordinances including care, restraint, quarantine, animal behavior, anatomy, hygiene, nutrition, first aid and customer service.  Humane and safe animal care and animal handling/restraint practices. Page 2 of 2  Veterinary medicine as well as animal emergency medicine  City and departmental policies, procedures and protocols.  Good customer relations related to dealing tactfully and professionally with customers and public in emotional or adversarial conditions. Skill in:  Comprehending and following written and/or oral instructions  Safely handling and restraining dogs and cats and other animals.  Reading and interpreting office memos, warnings, instruction manuals, and standard operating procedures.  Calculating dosages for medications for animals.  Interpreting policies and procedures regarding care of animals.  Handling conflict and uncertain situations.  Resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.  Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.  Using computer and related software applications.  Analyzing and interpreting animal behavior and human behavior.  Using a tranquilizer gun LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s license Advanced Level Animal Control Officer Certification through the Texas Department of State Health Services Certified Euthanasia Technician (Texas Academy of Animal Control Officers) PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Exposure to extreme temperature when outdoors; constant noise from barking dogs at the shelter and in the truck, physical risk from wild or vicious animals, work in the middle of the road on average of twice a week; occasional threats from agitated individuals; risk of contracting zoonotic diseases, including rabies.
