HomeMy WebLinkAboutAnimal Care SupervisorPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Animal Care Supervisor Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-Exempt Revision Date: 07/08/2014 SUMMARY: Under general supervision, oversees and supervises the staff and all other animal care aspects of the Animal Shelter. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Recommends for hire, supervises, and develops staff through review of performance data, conferences, counseling, training and evaluating of performance.  Inspects animal areas for sanitation, proper operations of mechanical equipment and condition of the cages.  Prepares expenditure authorization for various purchases.  Researches new ways to improve upon disinfection/sanitization techniques as well as researching new ways to improve upon an animal’s health and mental well-being while staying in the Shelter.  Participates in the planning and development of shelter wide policy and procedures.  Manages employee and volunteer scheduling to ensure business needs are being met.  Participates in the training and development of Animal Services staff.  Assists Shelter Veterinarian in surgery, performing various medical/laboratory tests, and medicating animals.  Interacts with volunteers and customers within the Shelter.  Assists in departmental planning of goals and objectives and assists in developing policies, procedures and protocols.  Responds to questions and interacts with volunteers and customers within the Shelter.  Cleans and maintains animal holding facility grounds and equipment in accordance with state regulations; cleans and disinfects animal cages, litter boxes, and pens; feeds and waters animals.  Assists in various aspects of community outreach, providing animal related training to public and private organizations and the general public.  Writes reports and records data on appropriate log/forms; maintains up-to-date records and files.  Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines High School diploma or equivalent. Three years of full-time progressively responsible work experience with animals in an animal shelter or similar setting. One year of the required experience must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity. One year of the required experience must have included working with veterinarian assisting in surgeries. OR Any equivalent combination of experience, training, and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of:  Federal, state and local laws pertaining to the care, treatment, handling and impoundment of animals.  Animal services and related programs.  Supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.  Animal and rabies control laws and ordinances including care, restraint, quarantine, animal behavior, anatomy, hygiene, nutrition, first aid and customer service.  Humane and safe animal care and animal handling/restraint practices.  Veterinary medicine as well as animal emergency medicine Page 2 of 2  City and departmental policies and procedures.  Good customer relations related to dealing tactfully and professionally with customers and public in emotional or adversarial conditions. Skill in:  Comprehending and following written and/or oral instructions  Drawing blood from animals for testing and; performing other medical procedures on dogs and cats.  Safely handling and restraining dogs and cats and other animals.  Reading and interpreting office memos, warnings, instruction manuals, and standard operating procedures.  Calculating dosages for medications for animals.  Interpreting policies and procedures regarding care of animals.  Handling conflict and uncertain situations.  Handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.  Resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.  Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.  Using computer and related software applications.  Analyzing and interpreting animal behavior and human behavior.  Using a tranquilizer gun LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s license Basic Animal Control Officer Certification through the Texas Department of State Health Services. Certified Euthanasia Technician (Texas Academy of Animal Control Officers) PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Exposure to extreme temperature when outdoors; constant noise from barking dogs at the shelter, physical risk from wild or mean animals, occasional threats from agitated individuals; exposure to cleaning chemicals; risk of contracting zoonotic disease (including rabies).
