HomeMy WebLinkAboutPermit TechnicianPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Permit Technician Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-exempt Revision Date: 02/26/2014 SUMMARY: Provides information and assistance to internal and external customers regarding permits and other building construction related activities. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Serves as first point of contact for Inspection Services providing frontline customer service for all building construction related activities.  Provides general and technical building code compliance information and assistance to property owners, developers, general contractors and other trade professionals as well as the general public, regarding Inspection Services processes, procedures and services.  Receives and enters all permits and other applications into project tracking software for the Department.  Performs varied and increasingly responsible technical work and plan review involved in the acceptance, review, processing and issuance of over the counter permits issued by the department.  Reviews application packets to ensure that all necessary documents are included in the submittals; routes permits and other applications to correct person for review.  Examines plans, technical documents, blue prints and specifications to determine completeness and accuracy of data; calculates and records permit and license fees.  Collects and assembles data and background materials for reports and special projects.  Assists in processing, collating and issuing approved applications for various activities.  Coordinates and schedules inspections with building and fire inspectors.  Verifies that final inspections have completed and documentation obtained; prepares Certificate of Occupancy for signature.  Provides administrative support to the Building Standards Commission, to include but limited to, preparing and distributing agendas, notices, minutes; provides administrative support for budget.  Processes financials for the Permits and Inspections Department; assists with the budget.  Receives, enters, and reviews applications for special events; follows up with applicant to ensure that all information and documentation is received; processes application as appropriate.  Maintains and manages department files, records and documents, electronically and/or paper.  Provides administrative support to the Chief Building Official and Chief Plans Examiner, as needed;  Serves as Notary Public.  Coordinates Special Event processes.  Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines High School diploma or equivalent. Two years of full-time technical and/or operational support experience involving public contact in the building industry with emphasis reading and interpreting construction plans and building codes. OR Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Page 2 of 2 Knowledge of:  Building codes and building inspection processes and procedures.  City of Georgetown’s Unified Development Code.  Plan check, zoning, code administration, enforcement and permit approval processes and procedures.  Building construction practices and materials.  Construction drawings, plans, drafting symbols, customs, and techniques.  Land measurement and legal descriptions  Applicable local, state, and federal codes, regulations and requirements.  City’s permit process and requirements to obtain construction related permits.  Records management and the Freedom of Information Act requirements.  Principles and practices of team work to accomplish the overall need of the department. Skill in:  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.  Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.  Reading, comprehending and communicating departmental processes, policies and procedures.  Using computers and related software applications; proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel.  Performing detailed work.  Using computer and related software programs.  Basic mathematics in order to calculates fees; calculates work hours and sufficient math to complete reports and basic bookkeeping skills.  Multiple task efficiently and applies knowledge of procedures to fulfill essential job duties. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s license Permit Technician’s Certification obtained through the ICC, International Code Council OR must obtain certification within one year from date of hire.
