Job Title: Chief Building Inspector

SUMMARY: Inspects residential and commercial structures to ensure building codes compliance for all phases of the
residential and commercial construction process. Supervises Inspectors conducting building inspections to determine code
compliance. Ensures efficient and accurate completion of development construction in an integrative fashion with effective
customer service.

subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Inspects new and existing residential and commercial structures for compliance with all adopted building codes,
floodplain, and Unified Development Code requirements.
Recommends for hire, supervises, and develops staff through review of performance data, conferences, training
and counseling.
Serves as project coordinator for commercial projects.
Performs certificate of occupancy inspections for new and existing commercial projects with Fire Prevention and
Planning Departments.
Examines residential and commercial construction plans and site development plans for code compliance.
Prepares inspection reports and maintains file, electronically and/or paper.
Reports inspection findings to other agencies for utility approval and connects.
Provides input into the code revision and code development process.
Performs other duties as assigned:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, training and Experience Guidelines
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Five years of full-time experience performing field
inspections related to all phases of building construction for compliance with approve plans, specifications, codes, and
ordinances. One year of the required experience must have been in a supervisory capacity. OR Any equivalent
combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
One additional year of full-time experience may be substituted for 30 semester hours of the required education with a
maximum substitution of two years.
Knowledge of:
Modern office and supervisory and leadership practices and principles.
Federal, state and local building, housing and safety codes and regulations.
Methods, procedures and techniques for evaluating technical compliance.
Principles and practices of the construction industry and building trades
Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Electrical knowledge and training of the National Electrical Code.
How to conduct inspections and examine plans of building construction, plumbing, electrical systems, framing,
foundation, and heating and air conditioning for compliance with building codes.
Building trades with integrative customer service skills.
Basic theory and fundamentals of building construction principals

Skill in:
Detecting life/safety hazards upon visual inspection of buildings/structures.
Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
Reading and interpreting detailed plans, blueprints, and code specification guides, reports, and building inspection
codes.
Using computer and related software to include Microsoft Word and Excel.
Handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Planning and organizing.
Applying code requirements.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Interpreting and applying technical code specifications
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Valid Class C Texas driver’s license
Texas State Plumbing Inspectors License.
Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical, and Energy Inspector certifications, obtained through Standard Building
Congress (SBCCI), ICC, Or International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO).
Electrical knowledge and training on the National Electrical Code.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision,
hearing, talking, use of foot controls.
Exposure to weather extremes, dust and construction hazards (e.g., open trenches, mud, noise, debris, falling objects,
heights etc.).
