JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator - Streets Effective Date: 10/01/2012

SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of an assigned lead or Forman operates a variety of heavy and light
equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, roads, alleys, etc. Participates in general
maintenance and labor activities as necessary for timely completion of projects and work orders.

subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to,
the following:
Operates a variety of heavy and light construction equipment..
Serves as the primary operator of heavy equipment such as road grader, reclaimer, grade-all trencher, etc.
Performs all duties associated with seal coating of streets.
Maintains, installs, repairs and constructs streets, roads, and alleys, including blading, reclaiming, rolling, and
asphalting assigned streets, roads, and alleys.
Cuts and clears fallen and overgrown trees.
Drives dump truck and other city trucks.
Hauls heavy and light equipment to and from assigned worksites.
Sets forms for curbs and drain inlets
Digs, hauls, sets rebar and forms, pours and finishes concrete.
Operates mower, sprayers containing herbicides and weed eater to clear grass and weeds from vacant lots,
telephone poles, signs, curbs, guardrails and fire hydrants.
Conducts safety inspections of vehicles and equipment, sets up barricades, cones and road signs, wears
protective and safety gear as indicated for the work assignment.
Prepares, gathers and transports tools, materials, supplies and equipment necessary to complete work
assignments.
Cleans and repairs work site upon completion of construction.
Serves as lead and provides on the job training to light equipment operators.
Provides assistance to the Drainage Department
Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, training and Experience Guidelines
High school diploma or equivalent. Two years of full-time experience operating heavy equipment performing duties
consistent with the essential functions of this classification. OR Any combination of experience, education and/or training
that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Knowledge of:
Construction and drainage maintenance and repair.
Occupational safety and health regulations, practices, and procedures for area of assignment safety procedures.
Routine maintenance and repair techniques for a variety of light and heavy equipment.

Skill in:
Operating light/heavy machinery and equipment.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Reading safety and hazard warnings on equipment and materials.
Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
Understanding and following oral and writing instructions.
Shooting grades and calculating grades, elevation and drainage fall.
Solving construction and repair problems.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Valid Texas driving license.
Must have or be able to obtain a Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.
Must have or be able to obtain DOT Medical Certification immediately upon obtaining CDL.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision,
hearing, talking, use of foot controls.
Constant exposure to weather extremes, noise and vibration from equipment, moving traffic near work sites
