HomeMy WebLinkAboutSystems AdministratorPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Systems Administrator Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Exempt Revision Date: 05/30/2014 SUMMARY: Ensures that the City’s server and database infrastructure is operational and appropriately managed. Manages the City’s server virtualization infrastructure. Participates in application software installation, implementation and operational monitoring. Monitors and maintains the City’s disaster recovery strategies. Performs configuration management and change control processes per defined standards. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Maintains standardized server and database configurations, and executing change controls for those configurations consistent with IT policy and processes.  Builds, operates and manages virtual servers, both production and non-production instances.  Manages virtualization software (VMWare vSphere) deployment and performance.  Builds, operates and manages database software, including initial setup and configuration, support during application implementation, go-live and ongoing operational monitoring/tuning.  Manages the server storage platforms, backup processes and schedule.  Manages the City’s IT storage platforms, including performance tuning, capacity management, provisioning, etc.  Manages and monitors data backup processes and provides restore support as needed.  Monitors and/or reviews system activity (up to and including user experience), progress, and performance reports of databases, to ensure accurate, appropriate, and effective use of data, including database definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, and operational guidelines to continually seek opportunities for improvement.  Assists in setting standards for hardware and software configuration, and participates in acquisition decisions.  May provide backup support to the Operations Manager and Network Administrator.  Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines Bachelor’s Degree in an information technology, management information systems, information science, or closely related field. Five years of full-time relevant work experience. OR Any equivalent combination of experience, education or training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. One year of additional full-time experience may be substituted for 30 semester hours of the required education with a maximum substitution of 2 years. Knowledge of:  Project management techniques for systems implementation projects.  Specifics of operating systems, database systems, storage software, etc., used by the City.  Handling information restricted to specific persons and is aware of meaning and consequences of improper administration or release. Skill in:  Communicating effectively both orally and in writing.  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers, clients, citizens, and vendors.  Reading and understand technical manuals, policies and procedures, system documentation.  Writing clear, accurate, timely documentation. Page 2 of 2  Writing clear, concise memos in non-technical terminology to brief managers, supervisors.  Performing arithmetic, make calculations of computer or network capacity.  Making simple projections and forecasts  Exercising sound judgment in interpretations and decisions.  Building, operating, managing and monitoring server environments including Windows Server (2003 or 2008) or Unix (Solaris, AIX or similar)  Managing centralized SAN or NAS storage platforms in conjunction with the server environment, including storage provisioning  Configuration standards and processes, performance tuning and backup strategies LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License Server: Microsoft's MCSE or MCITP or the ability to obtain within agreed upon time frame.
