HomeMy WebLinkAboutMechanic, LeadPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Lead Mechanic Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-Exempt Revision Date: 01/31/2014 SUMMARY: Assists the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor in the coordination of work and supervision of repair operations at the Service Center, including scheduling, supervision, assist in establishing work procedures and production standards, assist in maintaining repair/cost records, and monitoring supplies. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Directs and supervises the work activities of mechanics both on the shop floor and in the field.  Evaluates and assigns incoming requests for repairs.  Monitors progress, status and quality of repair work.  Coordinates repairs by outside vendors, including determining when this is the most cost effective.  Performs complex mechanical repairs on the most complicated vehicles (i.e. Fire trucks, electrical bucket truck) and pieces of equipment.  Collaborates with the Vehicle Services Supervisor to ensure customer satisfaction and to assure the optimum performance and efficiency of the city fleet.  Assists in the annual evaluations of mechanics.  Assists in the establishing of work procedures, production standards, and repair/cost records.  Monitors fuel levels and inventory loss controls at the City fuel site; maintains fuel dispensing equipment.  Orders, monitors and maintain shop supplies.  Maintains a Master Mechanic technical skill level in order to evaluate incoming requests for repairs and to identify the appropriate and most cost efficient repair method.  Performs troubleshooting on emergency breakdowns in the field.  Ensures that monthly safety inspections are conducted and documented; initiates corrective action.  Ensures that status reports on safety activities and progress are completed and documented in a timely manner.  Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines Two year accredited technical certificate in auto/truck/equipment repair or Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Business Management or Automotive Technology. Six years of full-time increasingly responsible work experience in a fleet maintenance environment. One additional year of experience may substitute for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education. OR Any combination of experience, training and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, or abilities. Knowledge of:  Specialized repairs to vehicle, equipment and Fire apparatus.  Methods, equipment, and materials used in servicing automobiles and other applicable equipment.  Fleet operations and services.  Various specialized types of vehicles diagnostic testing and analysis equipment and tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance.  Fiscal and budget preparation.  Federal, State and Local laws.  City practice, policy and procedures. Skill in:  Operating heavy equipment.  Diagnosing problems and perform major and minor mechanical repairs.  Operating a variety of hand power tools.  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.  Training, supervising, motivating and assisting in the evaluation of subordinates.  Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.  Using computers and related software.  Reading and comprehending technical manuals.  Comprehending and following oral and written instructions. .  Preparing work orders.  Performing applicable calculations.  Evaluate conditions of vehicles and equipment; determine most feasible and appropriate alternative for vehicle in need of major repair. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class B Texas driver’s license Master Automotive Technician (ASE) Master Heavy Truck Technician (ASE) Master Fire Apparatus (EVTCC PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls.
