HomeMy WebLinkAboutRecreation SpecialistPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Recreation Specialist Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-exempt Revision Date: 04/02/2014 SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Recreation Center Supervisor, performs responsible, professional work in organizing, developing, coordinating and directing programs and activities at the recreation center. Supervises assigned contract staff. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Plans, implements, supervises and evaluates comprehensive recreation programs for assigned center. • Develops, implements and markets recreation programs and classes for all age groups and interests. • Produces one-time events for various audiences. • Analyzes facility and program statistics to prepare monthly and annual financial and program participation reports and others as assigned. • Assists in the development and Implementation policies and procedures for use of Recreation Center; enforces recreation center rules and policies. • Recruits contract instructions to teach classes, verifies certifications and complete contract process. • Contacts local businesses, individuals and community organizations for program support and participation. • Assists in operating recreation center by providing input into facility needs and budget requests. • Performs office administrative tasks including, basic accounting, creating administrative forms, spreadsheets; creating and reviewing scheduling calendars for staff and programs. • Assists with the maintenance of the Recreation Center by monitoring equipment, building structure and contract janitorial/maintenance staff. • Registers clients for programs, classes, memberships, etc.; takes payment. • Inspects on all areas in Recreation Center to ensure safety of all guests. • Promotes the recreation center through newspaper releases, social media, cable T.V., user guides, leisure brochures, flyers, and educational and informative talks/presentations; assists with calendar publication. • Responds to inquiries and /or complaints from citizens and contract instructors; assists in investigating and resolving complaints. • Arranges for and schedules facilities, and appropriate activity supervision for programs in and outside of recreation center. • Assists in the development of and hosting of special events within the department. • Performs other duties as assigned or required MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, physical education, leisure services, or related field. Six months of experience in the development and implementation of recreation /leisure programs and/or fitness education and training programs. OR Any combination of experience, education or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of: • Purpose, use and benefits of municipal recreational activities. • Basic rules and regulations for amateur athletics, games and competitions, including Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) standards and United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA). • Occupational hazards and safety precautions Page 2 of 2 • Local community resources and regional community services programs. • Recreational programs and activities. • Federal, State and local laws and ordinances. • Safety practices and procedures Skill in: • Providing effective customer service, and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public. • Promoting and enforcing safe work place practices. • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationship with co-workers and the general public. • Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software. • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. • Interpreting policies and procedures. • Data analysis and problem solving. • Handling multiple tasks and prioritizing. • Planning, marketing, and promoting programs. • Working with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s license or must obtain within 30 days of hire date. CPR, First Aid, AED certification or must obtain within six months of hire date. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Work is performed indoors and outdoors at City recreation facilities and venues; required to perform moderate physical work, and move up to 40 pounds. Chemicals and recreation equipment.
