HomeMy WebLinkAboutAquatics SpecialistPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Aquatic Specialist Effective Date: 01/13/2015 FLSA Category: Non-Exempt Revision Date: SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor, performs responsible, professional work in organizing, developing, and overseeing aquatic programs and activities at the city’s aquatic facilities. Assist with lifeguard training, operations, safety protocols and implementing and evaluating a diverse range of aquatic programs. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Plans, implements, supervises and evaluates comprehensive aquatic programs for the assigned aquatic facilities. • Assist with the development and marketing of aquatic programs and classes for all age groups and interest. • Assist with directing the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities. • Assist with identifying opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; identifying resource needs; reviewing with appropriate staff; implementing improvements. • Analyzes facility and program statistics to prepare monthly and annual financial and program participation reports and others as assigned. • Assist in the development and implementation policies and procedures for the use of aquatic facilities; enforces aquatic facility rules and policies. • Assist with proper hiring and training of aquatic staff and instructors; coordinates or conducts first aid and CPR courses; instructs employees in aquatic emergency operations; conducts regular patrol of aquatic areas. • Verifies time worked by staff; submits timesheets for payroll. • Responds to and resolves customer complaints, questions, and suggestions related to aquatic programs, policies and procedures, activities, services, and special events. • Communicates with and promotes aquatics facilities and programs to local swim teams, rental groups, and to individuals or organizations who might be interested in having activities and rentals at aquatic facilities. • Ensures the mechanical operations and daily/seasonal maintenance of aquatic facilities; maintains correct water quality and chemical balance ensuring that all pools are properly maintained and up to federal, state, and local codes. • Ensures that status reports on safety activities and progress are completed and documented in a timely manner. • Preforms other duties as assigned and required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Recreation, Leisure Studies or related field. 6 months of experience in the development and implementation of aquatic programs. OR Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Knowledge of: • Aquatic and recreational activities and programming and their current rules, regulations and procedures. • The planning, administration and operation of aquatic and recreational programs and facilities. • Methods, tools and equipment used in water safety and aquatic training operations. • Modern and complex principles and practices of pool facility operations and maintenance including proper water chemistry levels. • Methods and techniques of swimming and lifeguard instruction. • Methods and techniques of CPR and first aid. • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation. Page 2 of 2 • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations. • Recreational Risk Management. • Customer service practices and techniques. • Occupational health and safety regulations and procedures. • City policies and procedures. Skill in: • Responding to emergency situations including safely rescuing drowning victims and administering CPR and First Aid. • Training people in lifesaving and safety methods and basic principles of pool operation. • Directing aquatics programs and the operation of City swimming pools. • Interpreting and explaining City aquatics program policies and procedures. • Assist with the operation and maintenance of City swimming pools. • Assist with supervision and directing aquatic staff. • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. • Resolving customer complaints and concerns. • Reading memos, daily instructions and policies. • Preparing daily cash and deposit sheets. • Interpreting and applying aquatic policies. • Conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem solving. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s License. Lifeguard CPR, First Aid and AED Certifications Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator required within first 6 months of hire. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Works outside in the summer heat and humidity. Exposed to water, pool chemicals, slippery surfaces, climbing ladder into the guard chairs, and crowds, mechanical and electrical systems related to pool facilities. Protective equipment suggested: sunscreen, SPF clothing and sunglasses. .
