HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Assistant - Public ServicePage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Library Assistant – Public Services Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-exempt Revision Date: 04/01/2014 SUMMARY: Assists in Library operations with emphasis on the operation of circulation desk and providing general assistance for library patrons. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Assists Library patrons at circulation desk with book returns and checkouts, payment of fines, and completing Library card application and hold request forms. • Collects payments. • Empties book drop and book collection areas. • Organizes books into their Dewey number and shelves them properly. • Maintains the order and cleanliness of Library areas and holdings. • Opens and prepares Library common areas, computers, office equipment and other search tools. • Logs into database statistics of patrons, reference questions and Library usage statistics. • Answers the telephone and refers calls to appropriate section. • Assist patrons in locating materials and information, both adults and children. • Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines High school diploma or equivalent. One year of full-time experience working in a modern library to include direct customer service experience. OR Any equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Library Circulation or Reference experience preferred. Knowledge of: • Library administration, organization, and operation. • Library reference computer. • Dewy Decimal System in order to shelve and locate books. Skill in: • • Using computer and various software programs. • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with organizations, schools, and general public • Working with adults and children. • Reading reports, memoranda, periodicals, journals, etc. • Filling out forms; taking messages. • Perform basic mathematical calculations to keeps tally of patrons entering building, make change, and calculating fines. • Responding to requests for information LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS None Page 2 of 2 PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls.
