HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrarian - ReferencePage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Librarian – Reference Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Exempt Revision Date: 04/01/2014 SUMMARY: Assists in assigned area to provide quality programs, activities, and assistance to customers. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Responds to requests for reference information and readers’ advisory received from patrons in person, by phone and via email. • Creates, develops, promotes and implements programs and projects in assigned area. • Instructs the public in the use of Library resources. • Reviews request for proctoring to determine eligibility for proctoring service and to ensure that institution requirements can be met; provides credentials to academic and certifying institutions as requested; schedules appointments; ensures adherence to proctoring criteria. • Serves as Librarian-in-charge as assigned. • Assists in selection, maintenance, and the organization of materials in assigned area. • Assists customers with utilizing computers. • Participates in marketing of library services and materials. • Provides coverage at the public service desks. • Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines Master’ degree from an accredited American Library Association college or university with major coursework in Library and Information Science, including at least one reference course. OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience equivalent to an MLS that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge of: • Library services, programs, research, and resources specific to area of assignment. • Library classification systems. • Reference tools, with experience using both printed and automated products. • Customer service methods and techniques. • City policies and procedures. Skill in: • Utilizing the computer and related equipment, hardware, and software to perform data entry, review, retrieval, and research. • Prioritizing, tracking, and managing multiple projects, assignments and duties. • Communicating effective, both orally and in writing. • Making formal presentations before audiences of peers or customers. • Assisting and providing instructions for children and adults. • Utilizing Internet web sites, professional publications, and references. • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. • Compiling and analyzing simple statistics. • Evaluating, interpreting, and analyzing day-to-day operations and formulate effective solutions to identified problems. Page 2 of 2 LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s license PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry, and vision to monitor.
