HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrarian - CatalogingPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Librarian - Cataloging Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Exempt Revision Date: 04/01/2014 SUMMARY: Assists in assigned area to provide quality cataloging and assistance to customers ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; employees may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodations will be made as required. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Utilizes professional cataloging tools to assign call numbers, subject headings, and other descriptive information to all library materials. • Verifies library materials against corresponding data on downloaded MARC records; verifies accuracy of data; makes necessary adjustments; and fills in missing information. • Searches available databases for MARC records for materials received without them; downloads and expands the data to conform to library standards. • Maintains accuracy of library catalog, including authority records. • Performs collection maintenance and development duties. • Performs record cleanup of the library catalog involving items already in the collection. • Provides coverage on the public services desks as assigned. • Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines Master’ degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university with major coursework in Library and Information Science, including at least one cataloging course. OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience equivalent to an MLS that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge of: • Library services, programs, research, and resources specific to area of assignment. • Accepted cataloging practices and procedures approved by the Library of Congress and American Library Association. • Customer service methods and techniques. • City policies and procedures. Skill in: • Utilizing the computer and related equipment, hardware, and software to perform data entry, review, retrieval, and research. • Prioritizing, tracking, and managing multiple projects, assignments and duties. • Communicating effective, both orally and in writing. • Making formal presentations before audiences of peers or customers. • Assisting and providing instructions for children and adults. • Utilizing Internet web sites, professional publications, and references. • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. • Compiling and analyzing simple statistics. • Evaluating, interpreting, and analyzing day-to-day operations and formulate effective solutions to identified problems. Page 2 of 2 LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s license PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry, and vision to monitor.
