HomeMy WebLinkAboutPlanning TechnicianPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Planning Technician Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-exempt Revision Date: 5/13/2014 SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Department’s Principal Planner(s), provide technical support to staff members, customers, and the public on issues related to planning, zoning, and development. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Receives and reviews project applications to determine if the application submittal includes all required supporting documents and fees. Enters documents and information into the online tracking system. • Organizes and maintains project case files, records, reports, correspondence, etc. consistent with departmental practices, procedures and record retention schedules. • Answers incoming calls and serves as first contact for the Planning Department; responds to requests for information or directs caller to appropriate staff member or department. • Serves as staff liaison for various Boards, Commissions and Subcommittees. Essential functions include preparing meeting materials; coordinating with department staff, creating and sending all notifications according to State and Local Codes, preparing and posting all agendas according to the Open Meetings Act; preparing minutes for approval and maintain official, accurate records and minutes of meetings. • Prepares legal notifications and agenda support for City Council meetings. • Serves as the online tracking system support for the department staff. • Utilizes computer systems to provide mapping, data entry, and website support. • Assists with outside agencies, consultants, and service providers during review and approval process • Performs technical and administrative support functions for long-range planning projects and City programs. • Coordinates pre-application meetings between landowners, technical professionals, and various City staff. • Assist in Department administrative capacity. • Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with course work in urban planning, GIS, or related field. Three years of full-time work experience in customer based office environment or similar work environment. One additional year of the required experience may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education. Knowledge of: • Local government structure. • City practices, policies, and procedures. • Modern office practices and procedures. • Customer service practices and principles. Skill in: • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. • Organizing and prioritizing work. Page 2 of 2 • Work on several projects or issues simultaneously. • Working independently or in a team environment as needed • Using computers and related software. • Analyzing data and problem solving. • Read reports, plans, legal documents, memoranda, letters and codes. • Creating agendas, letters, emails, and board and commission minutes. • Calculating fees for applications. • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff members, customers and the public. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver’s license PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, vision, hearing, talking. Exposure to adhesive sprays, uses hammer and nails, standing on ladder to retrieve records.
