RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE SPEED LIMITS NG S
HIGHWAY 29 (UNIVERSITY
WHEREAS, The Texas Department of Transportation recently conducted speed studies
on State Highway 99 (University Ave.) through the City of Georgetown; and
VaIEREAS, the speed studies were conducted in the month of February, which is not
representative of the traffic flow on State Highway 29, and
WHEREAS, the Georgetown City Council is concerned about the State recommendations
for the speed limits as relates to traffic and pedestrian safety.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, THAT:
SECTION 1. The facts and recitations contained in the preamble of this resolution are
hereby found and declared to be true and correct, and are incorporated by reference herein and
expressly made a part hereof, as if copied verbatim. The City Council hereby finds that this
resolution implements Transportation Policy 1 of the Century Plan - Policy Plan Element, which
states: "The City will encourage a transportation system that provides for the safe and efficient
movement of traffic, promotes the economic interests of the community, and adequately serves
the personal needs of individuals", and further finds that the enactment of this resolution is not
inconsistent or in conflict with any other Century Plan Policies, as required by Section 2.03 of
the Administrative Chapter of the Policy Plan.
SECTION 2. The City Council specifically requests that the Texas Department
Transportation reconsider the recommendations of the speed study and modify the speed l
at the following locations -
a. That the speed limit from Haven Lane through and including Pine St. be reduced
to 35 miles per hour because of the large number of University students crossing
State Highway 29 (University Ave.) and the amount of traffic being generated
from the University; and to facilitate school buses stopping at the railroad track
in the 900 block of State Highway 29 (University Ave.)
b. That the speed limit through the intersection of Maple St. and State Highway 25
(University Ave.) be set at 35 miles per hour because of the large amount oj-11
traffic exiting Maple St. onto State Highway 29 (University Ave.)
