A Discussion of possible items to include in Charter Election, based on work of the Charter Committee -- Trish
Carls, City Attorney
Carls noted that she and her law partner, Jo Christy Brown, had reviewed the information provided by the
Charter Committee and grouped together those items that could be combined for presentation on the ballot,
such as those items to bring the Charter compatible with state law, those items that were grammatical
changes, and those items that were substantive changes. Nelon noted at a recent Mayor's Alliance
Meeting that he heard about the City of Austin's "lengthy" ballot for Charter amendments because they
chose not to combine items. He said the other mayors said the number of items should be reduced so as
to avoid voter fatigue. The proposed changes were discussed individually with the Council to determine
which should be included as propositions on the ballot.
