HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 990713-DDA RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, SUPPORTING TAX CREDIT APPLICATIONS FOR AFFORDABLE RENTAL HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. WHEREAS, The City of Georgetown is experiencing an unprecedented rate of growth, having increased the population of residents from 14,842 in 1990 to 26,400 in 1999; and WHEREAS,the rate of growth has out paced the development of affordable housing for area residents, with over 1350 Georgetown households in rental housing paying more than 30% of their income for housing according to a 1998 Housing Needs Assessment; and WHEREAS, the City's growth has created a high demand for rental housing, with apartment occupancy rates in May, 1999, varying between 93 and 100% with most complexes between 98 and 100% filled; and WHEREAS, employers in Georgetown are reporting difficulties in retaining and recruiting workers because of the lack of affordable housing; and WHEREAS, service workers who are critical to the well -being of the community, including teachers, police officers, and firemen are reporting great difficulties in finding affordable housing in Georgetown NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, THAT: SECTION 1. The facts and recitations contained in the preamble of this resolution are found to be true and correct, and are incorporated by reference herein and expressly made a part hereof, as if copied verbatim. The City Council hereby finds that this resolution implements the following policies of the Century Plan - Policy Plan Element: 10.0 77ie City cooperates with builders, developers and property owners to provide safe and adequate housing opportunities for all citizens SECTION 2. The City supports the applications submitted to the Texas Department of Resolution No. Page 1 of 2 Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) for Low Income Housing Tax Credits, and strongly urges TDHCA to approve 1999 allocations for Georgetown, to meet the current and growing critical need for more affordable housing for this community.
