Regular Meeting
Citizens Comments: Denise Wilkinson resident of Berry Creek had issues with free
roaming cats on her property. When she purchased her home last year she was
unaware that her neighbor next door was feeding feral cats. This action has
resulted in several raccoons being trapped along with 2 feral cats. These cats are
killing birds and leaving them on her property and she has immediate safety
concerns. She wanted to know why cats were excluded from the nuisance
ordinance which allows cats to run at large within the city limits of Georgetown.
2. Approval of Minutes: January minutes were unavailable
3. Discussion and review of proposed changes to Chapter 7, Code of Ordinances.
Assistant City Attorney, Skye Mason would include under section 7.02.040 #10. Al
animals sold to address where animals are coming from (breeding in the
neighborhood). Concern voiced by citizen, Diane Coker, would city assure that the
sale of dogs and cats were from humane sources and are healthy at time of sale.
Section 7.05.100 discussion on capturing aggressive dog classifications.
4. Presentation of Animal Services Statistics: Jackie Carey reported on January stats.
Euthanized animals rate at 10% (cats 7 %, dogs 3 %). Staffing 2 new kennel techs
started in January, fund - raising working on "Art for Animals ". Special concern was
space, need room for meetings, classroom, special events and storage for
fund - raising activities. Discussion on a possible free - standing 35 x 35 building to the
right of the existing shelter.
5. Discussion on possible action on requirements of retail pet sales. Workshop has
been scheduled for Monday, April 22, 2013.
6. Discussion on shelter capacity and utilization metrics. For the month of January 5
days we doubled kennels for dogs due to space limitations.
7. Discussion and possible action on Advisory Board membership positions. There
would be available two openings due to the resignation of one previous board
member and expiring term for chairman, Mike Simpson.
8. Mike Simpson discussed his 4 years of learning about the operations of the shelter.
Public safety first, web site improvements, efforts to maintain a no -kill status in a city
shelter. Call to action to continue to maintain capacity reporting to meet the needs
of the city of Georgetown and for the Asilomar reporting to continue. Educate don't
legislate going forward. Focus on staff, re -label titles, ie, adoption consultants,
adoption specialists versus kennel staff.
9. Presentation of plaque to Mike Simpson for his four years of service to the city of
Georgetown Advisory Board Animal Shelter chairman.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
