Minutes 1
Regular Meeting
1. Citizens Comments
No citizens in attendance.
2. Approve minutes from the July 2013 Animal Shelter Advisory Board meeting - C. Albanese
Approval: Rachel
2 Lyle
3. Presentation of Animal Services status including statistical and analytical report for July and
August - J Carey
Jackie:
• Recommend that barn cats be kept indoors during extreme heat.
• New resource for feral cats: Austin Pets Alive. Should decrease cat euthanasia. APA Barn Cat
program will pick up the cats. If they don't have a home they have a screened porch (in Austin)
to keep them until a home is found.
• High adoption rate in August due to the 2 for 1 cat sale (40% adoption rate).
• Would like to explore the purchase of big fan (swamp cooler) to help the dogs in the extreme
heat. Cost — $1,100.
4. Discussion and possible action about requiring all dogs and cats in the City limits to be
microchipped. — J Carey
This topic will be tabled until more research can be done.
5. Discussion on future shelter growth and expansion needs — J Carey
Rachel asked if the shelter has had an expansion plan developed by a shelter architect. Need a
master plan first. A planner will identify deficiencies, provide ideas and options with cost estimates.
Could reach out to other cities or research best shelters and visit them. Max idea: Build a new facility
and keep this one, too.
