HomeMy WebLinkAboutReporter March 2014The spring collection period for yard trimmings for City of Georgetown residents only is March 3 through May 30.Collections are every- other-week.Branches should be bundled with twine and no more than four feet in length. Compostable brown paper lawn and leaf bags,available at local hardware stores,can be used for leaves,grass,or other organic material.A maximum of 20 bags or bundles can be picked up per collection. Yard Trimmings Pickup Georgetown Public Library Enjoy top Texas wines,sample foods from local restaurants,and add a side of live jazz music.That’s the menu for an evening of socializing and shopping on the Square at the fifth annual Georgetown Swirl from 6 to 9 p.m.Only 550 tickets are sold.The cost is $30 per person.Proceeds benefit the Main Street Program Facade and Sign Grant Program.Go to Swirl.Georgetown.org for details and tickets.Tickets typically sell out early. may be viewed any time during library hours.Prearranged docent- led tours are available for groups of 12 or more,including school groups.The exhibit text and a 28- minute video are in English and Spanish.The exhibit runs through April 27. Mon,Mar 10 –(morning)A celebration of Skippyjon Jones, the loveable Siamese cat who thinks he’s a Chihuahua. ©City of Georgetown,2014 VOL.11 •NO.3 A Publication of the City of Georgetown March 2014 Georgetown Swirl Saturday,March 1 Anne Frank Exhibit: A traveling exhibit from the Anne Frank Center USA in New York opens on March 2 at the library.The 11-panel exhibit is sponsored by the Congregation Havurah Shalom of Sun City.Shown in narrative,pho- tos,and a video,the display tells the story of Anne Frank from her birth in 1929 to her death in the Belsen concentration camp in 1945.The panels also include discussion of scapegoating,anti-Semitism,racism, ethnic cleansing,genocide,human rights,and democracy.The exhibit Aquatics Award:The Georgetown Parks and Recreation Aquatics program won the Agency of the Year Award from the Texas Public Pool Council in January.The award recognized Georgetown’s aquatics program as the best in the state among cities in the medium-sized cities category.Pictured with the award banner are Kimberly Garrett,parks and recreation director,and Stephanie Darimont,aquatics coordinator. Citizen Police Academy The Citizen Police Academy is a 12- week course taught by police officers and provides citizens an inside view of the daily activities of the Georgetown Police Department. The curriculum includes laws and code of criminal procedure,criminal and accident investigations,lethal and less-lethal weapons,crime scene investigations,victim services, hostage negotiations,gangs,officer safety,and the court system. Classes are Thursdays from March 20 through June 5.Sessions are 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.The first class is at the Georgetown Communications and Technology building at 510 W.Ninth Street. Applications are available at the Georgetown Police Department at 809 Martin Luther King,Jr.Street or online at files.georgetown.org/citizens-police- academy-application.Completed applications should be returned to the Georgetown Police Department. The deadline to apply is March 13.
