AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE SELECTION OF
PLAN NUMBER ONE FOR THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN'S
SINGLE MEMBER DISTRICT PROCESS.
WHEREAS, on
May
7, 1988,
the citizens
of the City of
Georgetown, Texas,
voted
to amend
the City
Charter to provide for
a single member district
WHEREAS,
election
process;
first reading,
WHEREAS, in response to the voters, the City Council of the
City of Georgetown employed attorneys experienced in districting
matters to prepare single member district plans for the selection
by the City Council;
WHEREAS, the attorneys have prepared three plans for the
Council's approval, known as options 1, 2, and 3, and these plans
have been available for public inspection and copying from
September 14th to the date hereof;
WHEREAS, notices were published in the local newspaper
inviting the public to attend a public hearing and to provide
comments on the proposed plans;
WHEREAS, the City held public hearings on October 6, 1988, to
receive comments and suggestions from the public regarding the
three option plans or any submitted plans by the public;
WHEREAS,
minor changes have been incorporated
into the plans
to accommodate
present voting precinct lines
and
other voting
district lines;
WHEREAS,
prior to a selection of a plan
for
first reading,
the Council
provided another opportunity
for
a public
hearing, held
on October 26, 1988, for citizens
to
respond to the
selection of the plans and for the Council to discuss,
WHEREAS, after review of all the plans, considering input
provided by the public, the Council finds that Option Plan No.
One best serves the City of Georgetown as a single member district
plan,
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS,
SECTION I.
The Council finds that the recitals set forth above are true and
correct and are incorporated herein verbatim as if fully set forth
at length.
SECTION II.
That Option Plan No. One is hereby approved as the single member
district plan for the City of Georgetown, Texas and is attached
hereto.
SECTION III.
Upon
final
reading,
the City Attorney is directed to submit this
plan
to the
Justice
Department for approval.
