On May 13, Georgetown residents in Council District 5 will go to the polls to choose a new City Council representative. The candidates for the single-member district seat are Pat Berryman and Mike Jackson. Incumbent John Kirby is not run- ning for re-election. Council District 5 includes neigh- borhoods north of Williams Drive, those along Northwest Boulevard, a portion of Serenada, and Berry Creek. Council District maps are available on the City web site at www.georgetown.org. Patty Eason is the current represen- tative for Council District 1, and is unopposed in seeking re-election. Both Kirby and Eason were elected to their first term in May 2003. Water Conservation Rates in Effect June 1 Starting with June 1 billings, water conservation rates are in effect for City of Georgetown water cus- tomers. A new feature of the Festival this year is “Art in the Park,” a juried art show and sale by artisans in San Gabriel Park the weekend of June 3 - 4. There also will be art exhibits around the downtown Square. Acclaimed conductor Peter Bay returns to the festival, this time with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, in a Friday evening concert of Haydn’s symphonies, concerti, and vocal works. A spectacular fireworks display will follow a free Saturday evening concert in San Gabriel Park featuring the Temple Symphony Orchestra, Thomas Fairlie conducting. Discover the latest news about the city at www.georgetown.org Sponsored by the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation, the TAAF Games of Texas will be held in southern Williamson County cities in the summers of 2006 and 2007. Games of Texas is the largest multi-sport event in Texas with approximately 10,000 athletes competing in 20 sports and more than 25 venues. In addition to the athletes, more than 40,000 spectators, volunteers, and officials are expected. Georgetown is one of the cities hosting GOT-WILL—the moniker for the 2006 and 2007 Games. This year the Games will be held July 27-30 with soccer and disc golf competitions July 21-23. The estimated economic impact of the event each year is $10 million. Local hotels and restaurants will likely see the biggest economic impact. “With 50,000 out-of- town guests, that’s a lot of food,” says Shelly Hargrove, tourism director for Georgetown. More than 1,000 volunteers will be needed for registration, conces- sions, scorekeeping, event setup and cleanup, and scores of other duties. Reading...The Sport of Champions is the theme this year for the chil- dren’s program (up to age 12). At registration, children set their read- ing goals for the summer and if they read a minimum number of books, they are eligible for the grand prizes awarded at the end of the program. The program kicks off on Friday, May 26 with a rodeo party from 4 - 7 p.m. at Kelley’s Kids.The grand finale will be a cowboy break- fast with the Biscuit Boys on July 28. All events for the teen summer pro- gram take place at 4:00 on Friday afternoons during June and July. No registration is required for this program, which is for young people from 6th through 12th grades. Each Camp Goodwater Ages 5 -13 (child must have completed Kindergarten) Based at the Georgetown Recreation Center, activities include arts and crafts, swimming, Challenge Course elements, archery, caving, canoeing, rock climbing, nature activities, and a weekly field trip. Weekdays 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.with early drop-off and late pick-up available. Weekly sessions May 30 – Aug.11. $120 weekly for residents, $130 for nonresidents. Tennis Camp Ages 8 - 14 For youth players of all levels. Camp activities at the Georgetown Tennis Center include basic stroke instruction, innovative drills, strategy sessions, match play, camp tournament, team competitions, snacks, and swimming. Weekdays 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Weekly sessions June 5 – Aug. 11. $120 weekly for residents, $130 for nonresidents. Munchkins Tennis Camp Ages 5 -7 (child must have completed Kindergarten) A fun and friendly atmosphere with enjoyable tennis drills and a mid-morn- ing snack. Tennis racket provided if needed. Swimming will not be a part of this camp. Friends Book Sale The seventh annual Book Sale sponsored by the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library will be June 1 - 4 at the Georgetown High School commons. Proceeds benefit the library. Friday is a stand-alone event. The theme this year is Fantasy. At the 4 - 6 p.m. kick-off on Friday, June 9, participants will enjoy Renaissance festival-type food while they learn what the Library Teen Advisory Board has planned for the Fridays during June and July.
