Both bridges will be above the 100-year flood plain and should be completed by the end of the year. A firm with promising technology for fighting cancer is joining the Texas Life-sciences Collaboration Center in Georgetown. Molecular Templates, Inc. announced in April that it will become the sixth firm to join the biotech center. Dr. Eric Poma, CEO of Molecular Templates, says he expects three employees to move to the TLCC this summer. The company has a lead compound for melanoma that is expected to enter human clinical trials and is developing additional compounds against a variety of other cancers. Founded by researchers at the University of Toronto and the Ontario Cancer Institute, Molecular Templates is the first from outside Dr. Eric Poma, CEO of Molecular Templates and Russ Peterman, executive director of the TLCC, at the announcement of a federal grant to the TLCC on April 8. Life-sciences Center Adds Sixth Company the U.S. to move to the life-sciences center. In April, Southwestern University announced a $461,340 federal grant to purchase laboratory equipment for the TLCC. The funds will enable the TLCC to equip a full-service biotech wet lab, tissue culture labs, and nanotech clean room. The City of Georgetown is provid- ing $250,000 for the first three years of operations for the TLCC, which is a nonprofit founded in 2007 to support companies with new biotechnology products. Other funding is provided by Southwestern University and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce. The TLCC is located at 111 Cooperative Way in Georgetown. Oak Tree Drive and College Street Bridges Under Construction The low-water crossing over Berry Creek on Oak Tree Drive was closed in April for the duration of the bridge construction. Traffic detours are marked. Construction on the new College Street Bridge started in March. The existing low-water crossing on Morrow Street in San Gabriel Park should remain open to traffic during most of the construction period. Once the new bridge is complete, the old low-water crossing will become part of the City’s hike and bike trail system. The City’s outdoor swimming pools, including the splash pool at the Recreation Center, will be open for Memorial Day weekend on May 23 and 24 and on May 29 – 31. Regular summer hours begin on June 3. The water audit provides information Do-it-yourself online Audit Your Energy and Water Use Special Needs Dance, July 24 Parks and Recreation will host a Fiesta Party Special Needs Dance on July 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. This event at the Community Center, 445 E. Morrow Street, is for people with special needs, ages 15 and older. Enjoy food, danc- ing, photos and prizes. Admission is $5.00 per person, free for a caregiv- er/family member. Austin Avenue. Adult Softball Registration Registration for summer session II of adult slow-pitch softball is June 22 through July 20. Cost is $320 per team. Late registration is July 21 – 27 with a cost of $365 per team. Play begins on August 3. This league is for adults ages 18 and older. Youth Kickball Registration Registration for youth kickball is May 19 to June 29. This is a fun, educa- tional league for youth in third through eighth grades. Players must be eight years of age on or before July 7. Registration fee is $30 for residents and $40 for nonresidents. League start date is July 7.
