Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8587 in Georgetown were present to help plant trees at the event. Volunteers planted 41 trees from species that are native and adapt- ed to the Central Texas climate. Come to the Stroll Parade on Saturday, December 4 and bring a new, unwrapped toy for Blue Santa. Toys will be collected from Blue Santa Elves in the Stroll Parade that starts at noon. Each year, children in hundreds of fami- lies receive toys from Blue Santa, a program of the Georgetown Police Department. New, unwrapped toys also can be brought to the Georgetown Police Department or to donation barrels at businesses in Georgetown. Checks to “CPAAA Blue Santa” should be sent to the Georgetown Police Department, c/o CPAAA Programs, 809 MLK Jr. Street, Georgetown, TX, 78626. Donations are deposited in the Blue Santa account of the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, a nonprofit that manages Blue Santa and other community programs. Donate $15 or more to Georgetown Blue Santa and you’ll receive a collectable Blue Santa Elf lapel pin. City Boar ds and Commissions The City of Georgetown is accepting applications to fill vacant or expiring terms on the City’s 18 boards or commissions. The deadline to apply for one of these volunteer positions is Januar y 14. Terms begin in March. Information and applications are available at www.geor getown.org. Heather Brewer, urban forester for the parks and recreation department, was awarded the Gold Leaf Award for Outstanding Arbor Day Activities of 2010 at the September Texas Tree conference. The award, co-sponsored by the Texas Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture and the Texas Forest Service, was in recognition of the Arbor Day Tree Planting Brewer coordinated at VFW Park on April 17. Toys for Blue Santa at Stroll Parade Heather Brewer, urban forester and Eric Nuner, assistant director of parks and recreation with the City of Georgetown with Jim Rooni from the Texas Forest Service at the awards ceremony of the 2010 Texas Tree conference. Christmas Tree Recycling Starts January 3 If you have a live tree in your house for the Christmas season, instead of sending it to the landfill in January, turn it into garden mulch. From January 3 through January 30, bring your Christmas tree to the City of Georgetown Collection Station and we’ll grind it up into mulch. Before you drop off your tree, please remove the tree stand and any gar- land, ornaments, or lights. Mulch is available, year-round, free- of-charge at the Collection Station, located at 250 W.L. Walden Drive. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Collection Station will be closed on December 25 and January 1. Candlelight Service, December 2 A holiday tradition in the chapel at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Southwestern University. The service includes carols and music from the university chorale and orchestra. First Friday, December 3 T’was The Night Before Stroll on the downtown Square with Bethlehem Village, Dessert with the Grinch, and music on the Eighth Street Main Stage from 6 – 9 p.m. See the Downtown Georgetown Association website at TheGeorgetownSquare.com. Holiday to Remember, December 3 – 4 Holiday performance featuring the Georgetown High School choirs and Dance Department groups at 7 p.m. at the Klett Center for the Performing Arts at Georgetown HS. Christmas Stroll, December 4 The 30th annual Christmas Stroll on the downtown Square with more than 100 art and craft ven- dors, Bethlehem Village, horse- drawn carriage rides, photos with Santa, and Whooville with free activities for children. The Stroll parade starts at noon. Stroll festi- val hours are noon – 8 p.m. Singer and songwriter Lance plays 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the main festi- val stage. Details at www.TheGeorgetownSquare.com. December Events Georgetown Swirl on February 26 Mark your calendars for the Georgetown Swirl on February 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. on the downtown Square. Sample fine wines and foods in downtown businesses and enjoy live jazz music in this fun event that benefits the Main Street Program’s facade and sign grants. Online ticket sales for the Georgetown Swirl begin in mid-November. The cost is $25 if you purchase your ticket before January 1, when the cost goes to $30. Go to www.Swirl.Georgetown.org for details and tickets. Registration for Georgetown Parks and Recreation co-ed youth basketball is November 20 through January 7. The fee is $35 for Georgetown residents and $45 for nonresidents. Leagues are for youth pre-K through 7th grade. Games are played on Saturdays at the Georgetown Recreation Center starting on January 8 for 10 weeks. Volunteer coaches are Holiday Closings City offices closed Dec. 23 – 24 and Dec. 31. No solid waste or recycling collection on Sat., Dec. 25. December Events Sun City Holiday Home Tour, December 3 - 5 Featuring six homes professional- ly decorated for the holidays. Phone Book Recycling Recycle your old phone book from December 1 through January 4. Look for special containers at both HEB store locations in Georgetown. Project Re-Direct is a service provid- ed by AT&T and HEB. A collectible brass Christmas orna- ment featuring a street scene with the Masonic Lodge Building on Main Street goes on sale during the week of Thanksgiving. The annual ornament sale is a project of the Main Street Advisory Board. The cost of the ornament is $22 and all proceeds will be used for holiday decorations and lights for the downtown. Ornaments featuring the Palace Theatre and the M.B. Lockett Building are also available for $20 each. The ornaments can be purchased at the Visitor Information Center at 101 E. Seventh Street.
