Red Poppy Ride: This charity bicycle ride begins Saturday at 8 a.m. See the link at RedPoppyFestival.com for details or to register. The ride includes 14-mile, 30-mile, 45-mile, 62-mile, and 100-mile routes. It starts and ends at the Georgetown High School Annex located at 2295 N. Austin Avenue. Red Poppy 5K Run: The 5K run starts on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. See the link at RedPoppyFestival.com for details or to register. Car Show: Classic cars, Corvettes, and hot rods on the Square on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register, see the link at RedPoppyFestival.com. Other music groups on Saturday and Sunday at the festival include country artist Kori Jean Olsen, Emmy award-winning PBS favorites the Biscuit Brothers, Georgetown High School Jazz bands, and the Southwestern University Jazz Band. VOL. 8 • NO. 4 A Publication of the City of Georgetown April 2010 Little Texas, known for their no. 1 country hits What Might Have Been, God Blessed Texas, and My Love, perform at 9:30 p.m. in the Saturday night concert at the Red Poppy Festival. Called ‘America’s favorite country rockin’ band,’ Little Texas has won CMT awards, a Billboard award, and a Radio & Records award. Their free Georgetown show is part of their 20th anniversary tour. Returning for their second appearance at the Red Poppy Festival, Two Tons of Steel kicks off the Saturday night concert at 7:30 p.m. with their rambunc- tious brand of coun- try-rooted rock. Two Tons of Steel has per- formed eight times at the Grand Ole Opry and their Two Ton Tuesdays summer series at Gruene Hall has been selling out for 14 years. Friday Concert: Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes play at 8:30 p.m. in a special Friday night concert (April 23) on the Square. Named as one of the top ten party bands in the U.S. by Harper’s Bazaar magazine, their show not only captures the authentic sounds of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, but the look, feel and fun as well. April Events Rebates for New Home Appliances If you are thinking of replacing an old appliance or hot water heater, the new model may be eligible or an energy efficiency rebate. The program is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, known as the federal stimulus bill, to support state rebate programs for residential Energy Star appliances with improved energy efficiency ratings. In Texas, the State Energy Conservation Office will offer the rebates which could total $23,341,000. Who Qualifies:The rebates are for consumers who buy eligible Energy Star appliances and replace the same type of old appliance that’s functional. The Texas program also will offer an incentive to recycle old appliances. Timing:The mail-in rebates will apply to eligible appliances purchased between April 16 and April 25. The rebate program will not be retroactive. It only will apply to purchases made once the program officially begins in April 2010. Tax Help at the Library Starting in February, federal tax forms and professional tax assistance will be offered at the Georgetown Public Library. The free assistance is offered until April 15 at these times: Tuesday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, 12 to 4 p.m. Thursday, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rebate Process:Consumers can reserve an appliance rebate by calling a toll-free number or registering online at seco.cpa.state.tx.us/arra starting approximately April 2. After the reserved mail-in rebates are award- ed, any remaining funds will be rebat- ed to consumers on a first-come, first- served basis. Shoppers will be limited to two appliance rebates and two recy- cling rebates per household. Rebate Amounts:The rebates will be available for a number of models of refrigerators, freezers, room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, central air conditioners, air source heat pumps, and hot water heaters. Rebate amounts vary from $45 to more than $1,600 based on the appliance and model. The 11th annual Georgetown Animal Shelter Garage Sale will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17 at the Community Center at 445 E. Morrow Street in San Gabriel Park. Sale hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. All proceeds benefit homeless ani- mals at the Georgetown Animal Shelter. The annual sale helps to provide funds for low-cost spay and neuter services, adoption programs, and equipment at the shelter. This year, donations will be accepted only at set times in March and April before the sale at the rear of the old Georgetown Library Building at 808 Martin Luther King, Jr. Street. Bring donations to the back of the library on West Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets. Volunteers are available to accept donations on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be signs directing you to the drop off loca- tions. Donation receipts will be available. “Furniture, decorator items, bicycles, antiques, and collector items are good items to donate,” says Jackie Carey, animal shelter supervisor and coordinator for the annual sale. Districts 3, 4, 7 Election on May 8 Council seats for representatives from District 3, District 4, and District 7 will be on the May 8 bal- lot in Georgetown. As of press time, Danny Meigs has filed to run for the District 3 seat, Bill Sattler, incum- bent, has filed to run for the District 4 seat, and Tommy Gonzalez has filed to run for the District 7 seat. Keith Brainard, incumbent for District 3, has announced he intends to run for re-election, and Ben Oliver, incumbent in District 7, has announced he does not intend to seek re-election.
