An Ordinance of the City Council of the City of Georgetown, Texas, Amending
the following Sections of the Unified Development Code, passed and adopted on
March 11, 2003, to Define and Adopt Provisions Regulating Marquee Signs:
Section 10.06, Table 10.06.010; Section 10.06.030; and Section 16.05, repealing
conflicting ordinances and resolutions; including a severability clause; and
establishing an effective .date
Whereas, the City Council adopted the Unified Development Cale (UDC) on March 11, 2003;
and
Whereas, the City Council determined that this amendment was necessary on August 2� 2005;
and
Whereas, the Planning and Zoning Commission conducted a duly noticed Public Hearing on
October 4, 2005 to consider a recommendation on these UDC amendments; and
Whereas, the Planning and Zoning Commission at their meeting of October 4� 2005
recommended to the City Council approval of the proposed UDC amendment; and
Whereas, the caption of this Ordinance has been published in the Williamson County Sun in
compliance with the City Charter of the City of Georgetown.
Now therefore, be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Georgetown, Texas that:
Section 1. The facts and recitations contained in the preamble of thisordinance are
hereby found and declared to be true and correct, and are incorporated by reference herein and
expressly made a part hereof, as if copied verbatim. The City Council hereby finds that this
ordinance implements the Century Plan as follows:
Policy 1.0: The community enjoys the benefits of well-planned land use in which
conflicting needs are balanced.
Goal: Develop policies which enhance the quality of life for the community
while preserving the unique character and natural resources.
Strategy: Implement the Unified Development Code (UDC) to ensure consistency
of the City's development ordinances to preserve the character of the
community.

and further finds that the enactment of this ordinance is not inconsistent or in conflict with any
other Century Plan Ends, as required by Section 2.03 of the Administrative Chapter of the Policy
Plan.
Section 2. Section 10.06 "Sign Design and Area Regulations", 10.06.010 "Sign
Dimensional Standards", Table 10.06.010 "Sign Dimensions by District" of the "Unified
Development Code," is hereby amended by adding a classification category for a Marquee sign
and a subsection F with conditions as follows:

for Signs" in the City's Design Guidelines for the Downtown Overlay District.
Monument signs shall be no greater than 5 feet in height and pole signs will not be
permitted.
Section 3. Section 10.06.030 of the "Unified Development Code," is herebyamended
by adding subsection "F" as follows:
10.06.030 Design Requirements
F. Marquee Sign
The following sign design standards shall be used in addition to Table 10.06.010 Sign.
Dimensions by District for a Marquee sign as defined in Section 16.05. The definition of a sign in
Section 16.05 shall also apply for all types of signs used within this section.
1. Wall signs for the advertisement of the business will be allowed for the maximum area
per square foot as allowed in the district as provided in Table 10.06.010 andsubject to
the conditions of 10.06.030 C.
2. Except as otherwise stated in this subsection. F(2), Monument signs shall be the only sign
allowed per lot as allowed in the district as provided in Table 10.06.010 and subject to
the conditions of Section 10.06.030 A. Notwithstanding the foregoing, signs on properties
with IH 35 frontage for movie theaters, performing art theaters, or athletic complexes
would be allowed on either the Pole sign or on the wall sign, as defined in Section 16.05
for Marquee, but not on both.
3. A Marquee sign shall be located on the buildings primary facade and over the main
entrance.
4. The height of a Marquee sign shall not exceed twenty (20) feet.
5. In addition to the maximum area per square foot sign allowance forthe business wall
advertisement sign as provided for in Table 10.06.010, an additional (one) 1 square foot
per linear foot of primary facade for additional Marquee signage can be allowed.
Notwithstanding the forgoing, in no event shall the total amount of 2 (two) square feet
per linear foot of primary facade for total wall signage be exceeded.
6. Posters or announcements shall be located directly under the Marquee sign in protective
cases and shall not exceed 50% of the area contained within the overall maximum width
of the Marquee sign. If so located and sized, such posters or announcements shall not be
calculated as an element towards the total maximum sign area. If the posters or
announcements are greater than the 50% standard set forth in this subsection, the posters
and announcements shall be included in the entire area to be calculated as an element of
total allowable site signage.

7. Section 10.03.020 K relating to Provisionally Exempt Signs shall also apply to this section.
8. No buildings or facilities other than movie theaters, performing arts theaters, and
athletic event facilities shall be allowed to have Marquee signs.
Section 4. The following definition of Section 16.05 "Definitions" of the "Unified
Development Code," is hereby amended as follows:
Marquee. Any permanent roof like structure projecting beyond a building or extending from a
facade, along and projecting beyond the wall of the building, generally designed a -id
constructed to provide protection from the weather including a Mansard Roof. A sign attached
to, in any manner, or made a part of a Marquee. (See also definition of "Sign".)
Section 5. All ordinances that are in conflict with the provisions of tllisordinance be, and
the same are hereby, repealed and all other ordinances of the City not in conflict with the
provisions of this ordinance shall remain in full force and effect.
Section 6. If any provision of this Ordinance or the UDC, or application thereof, to any
person or circumstance, shall be held invalid, such invalidity shall not affect the other provisions,
or application thereof, of tl-ds ordinance which can be given effect without the invalid provision or
application, and to this end the provisions of this ordinance are hereby declared to be severable.
Section 7. This Ordinance shall become effective immediately upon its final adoption.
