HomeMy WebLinkAboutMIN 05.20.1991 CC-SMINUTES OF MEETING OF THE GOVERNi1-,G BODY OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS The City Council of the City of Georgetown, Texas, met in a special session on the above date with Mayor Bill Connor presiding. Council Members Presents Mike McMaster Jane Voltz Bill Shelby Bob Schrawger Ferd Tonn Shorty Valdez Winfred Bonner SPECIAL SESSION --Call to Order at 7:05 p.m. Council Members Absent: None 910235 Minute Action authorizing the Mayor to sign a lease agreement with the FDIC for space in the Lake Aire shopping center to be used for a Youth Center/Mike McMaster Mike expects to hear from FDIC tomorrow on whether they approve our proposed lease. Motion by Schrawger, second by McMaster to authorize the Mayor to sign the lease agreement with FDIC. Approved 7-0. 910236 Presentation of recognition plaque to Council Member Winfred Bonner/Mayor Connor Mr. Bonner thanked the City for the recognition. 910237 Ordinance 91-15 canvassing votes for the May 18, 1991 Runoff Election and declaring the election results official/ Elizabeth Gray Election results were that Bill Shelby was elected in District 5 and Shorty Valdez was elected in District 1. Motion by Saegert, second by Bonner to approve the ordinance as read. Approved 7-0. Joe Saegert thanked the citizens in District 5 for having voted him in as Council Member two years ago. He said he has no regret, sorrow or misgiving about his term on the Council. He didn't accomplish everything he had set out to, but was proud of the airport runway extension, and the Central Texas Treatment Center; and was glad that he had voted against the budget and new tax rate, even though they passed. He said he made new friends and made many memories. He said that Georgetown is a great place to live Minutes of City Council Meeting/May 20, 1991 Page 1 of 3 and has been goad to him and his family. He feels that ueorgetownn has the opportunity to have a great future, but the Council must involve both the "old" and "new" Georgetown citizens and bring them together to make Georgetown the greatest. ,�10239 Special presentation to outgoing Councilmembers/Mayor Connor Mayor Connor presented a plaque to outgoing Council Member Joe Saegert. 910240 new r.. Elizabeth Gray administered the oath of office to incumbent District 1 Council Member Shorty Valdez, and newly elected District 5 Council Member Bill Shelby. • i jlikk r' Shorty thanked the voters and welcomed Bill Shelby. Bill Shelby thanked the voters and told the Council he wants to be independent, not a "yes" or "no" man. He said he will listen, give, take, and work together. He also said he was disturbed by the voter apathy, and thanked his opponent, Steve Bamsch, for an honest race. j11 Jill jp� The Mayor opened the floor for nominations. Shorty Valdez nominated Mike McMaster. Bob Schrawger seconded the nomination. Motion by Ferd Tann that nominations cease, second by Winfred Bonner. Approved 6-0-1. (no opposition, McMaster abstained) Election of Mike McMaster was approved 6-0-1. (no opposition, McMaster abstained) 910243 Swearing in of MayorPro-Tem/Elizabeth Elizabeth Gray administered the oath of office to Mayor Pro -Tem Mike McMaster. 910244 Schedule of Council workshops and orientation sessions/Bob Hart The following scheduled events were announced. Tuesday, May 21 Wednesday, May 22 Thursday, May 23 Friday, May 24 Saturday, May 25 Joint Meeting with P & Z 7:30 a.m. Ethics & Finance Workshop 12:00 noon TML Regional Meeting *7:30 p.m. Lunch with Mark Rose 12:00 noon Team -Building Orientation 8630 a.m. Cafe on the Square City Hall Conf.Room La Grange VFW Hall Berry Creek Country Club City Hall Conference Room 910245 Mayor, Councilmember, and City Manager comments and reports Winfred Bonner reported that the Single Member Redistricting Committee met again last Saturday in the Library. Would like to have more participation from the community. Bob Schrawger welcomed Bill Shelby as new Council Member from District 5. Shorty Valdez was honored by Marcus Pritchett of GTE for exemplary service. Shorty was one of twenty-two employees recognized out of 1000 GTE employees. Jane Voltz congratulated Shorty Valdez and welcomed Bill Shelby. Ferd Tonn congratulated Valdez and welcomed Shelby. Mike McMaster pointed out that Bill Shelby is the 16th Council Member with whom he has served. Bill Shelby commented that it had been an "enlightening night." Mayor Connor welcomed Bill Shelby and congratulated Shorty Valdez for returning to the Council and for his GTE recognition. These minutes were compiled by Sandra Lee and reviewed by Elizabeth Gray.
