A Workshop discussion and possible action
regarding
the questions to be
used in conducting the 2008 City of
Georgetown Quality of Life Survey -- Micki
Rundell,
Director of Finance
and
Administration
Rundell explained the history and purpose of the Quality of Life Survey. She said it was originally intended to
give feedback regarding development issues, but is now set to gauge response to other current projects, such
as road bonds, and sales tax elections; and is focused on the results/services provided. She noted that a copy
of the results of the February 2006 Survey was provided in the agenda packet. Oliver asked not to use
abbreviations in the future. Snell confirmed that there is a mix of demographics used. Eason suggested
separating out arts and culture issues from the entertainment questions and asked for alternative wording for
tourism issues such as "what would make Georgetown a destination?" She noted question number 71 in last
year's survey had not been repeated in the suggested questions for 2008. Brainard took exception to the way
the survey is broken down regarding location and demographics. He had comments about the questions in the
survey and offered suggestions for clarification of the wording. He suggested specific questions regarding city
property tax and whether the citizen knows the name of the Mayor and his/her councilmember. Snell suggested
that there be an "umbrella" statement asking if citizens would be willing to pay higher taxes for certain amenities.
It was suggested by Mayor Nelon that the questions be "wittled down," saying citizens would be more willing to
participate if the survey didn't take so long. Rundell noted that the timeline for accomplishing the survey in this
calendar year does not allow much time for retooling. Nelon instructed Rundell to check with the vendor about
redoing some of the questions and then let the Council know the response. Brainard asked about "charitable
contributions by the City," and Snell explained that the social service funding is not considered to be "charitable
contributions," because the services provided by those institutions are services that the City would otherwise be
responsible to provide.
