Arts and Culture Board
City of Georgetown, Texas
August 20, 2019
The Arts and Culture Board met on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. in the second floor Small
Conference Room of Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8th Street.
Present: Jane Estes, Susie Flatau, Tim Fleming, Laura Sewell, Sharon Snuffer, Carol Watson and Linda
Wilde.
Absent: None.
Staff present: Amanda Still — Arts and Culture Coordinator, Eric P. Lashley — Library Director and Lawren
Weiss -Administrative Assistant.
Chair Estes called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.
Regular Agenda
A. Citizens wishing to address the Board. — Jane Estes, Board Chair. None present. No action
required.
B. Announcements regarding arts and culture. — Janes Estes, Chair.
a. Susie Flatau with Georgetown Art Works announced the Cultivated on Dry Land exhibit
opens on 8/23. Georgetown Art Center will host a monthly creative series called Engage in
the studio space and local art organizations. Emma McMullen will be the first speaker on
September 21 and will discuss navigating social media. This event is free and open to the
public. The Canvas Project will take place 3rd Sat. in September, which is a partnership w/
Wolf Ranch. Four people will run for the at -large positions on Georgetown Art Works' board.
Elections will be held September 9.
b. Carol Watson with Georgetown ISD announced September 17, Georgetown High School will
host a talent show at the PAC. The event is a fundraiser for the choir department. Tickets are
$5 each.
c. Jane Estes with Lark & Owl Booksellers announced the ribbon cutting celebration on August
29, followed by Penguin & Random House representatives sharing a book preview later that
evening. This event is free and open to the public. Friday, August 30, L&O will host Family
Fun with the Georgetown Fire Department. This event will feature a meet & greet with Koda
the Fire Dog, story time with a firefighter and a climb aboard a GFD fire truck. All weekend
long, L&O will host yard games and live music.
Upcoming events include:
i. Writers' League of Texas event in September
ii. GPL Adult Spelling Bee @ L&O, September 20. The Bistro will sell themed cocktails.
iii. Sept. 25 Dr. Edward Berger speaking about his math books.
iv. Sept. 26 @ 7 p.m. Rashad Jennings, a literacy advocate and former NFL player, will
do a book signing for his children's books.
d. Linda Wilde with Texas Society of Sculptors announced the annual library show was a great
success with five times the number of people's choice votes this year compared to last year.

There will be artist demos, featuring five artists using different mediums in the library lobby on
September 14. Last day to view this show is September 21.
e. Laura Sewell with Southwestern University announced there will be about 50 music concerts
this season. The Sarofim Music Series will feature classical guitarist Adam Del Monte, among
many others. The Annual Student Art exhibit is currently up in the Alma Thomas Fine Arts
Center, which has experienced a high attendance. The theatre department will showcase The
Wolves, 12 Angry Jurors, Little Women the Musical and Stupid F##ing Bird.
f. Stuart Wallace with Georgetown Art Works announced they are working on Art Hop, which
will be on display at the Art Center and Georgetown Public Library September 27-October 26.
GAW will launch its new website on September 1.
No action required.
C. Consideration and possible action to approve minutes from the July 16 2019 meeting minutes. —
Jane Estes, Chair. Motion by Wilde; second by Sewell to approve minutes from the July 16,
2019 Arts and Culture Board meeting. Approved 7-0.
D. Consideration and possible action to consider a request from Georgetown Art Works' President
Stuart Wallace fora grant for the Art Center. —Eric Lashley, Library Director. Georgetown Art Works'
President Stuart Wallace provided an overview of the organization's expenses, revenues and
programs. Wallace requests that the City invest more finances into the Art Center, to help the
organization maintain the same level of functionality. This would show support of the organization
and help the two organizations move toward the City managing the facility in the future with
Georgetown Art Works acting as a fundraising and supporting organization such as the Friends of
the Library. Following much discussion, Sewell proposed providing a grant to Georgetown Art
Works utilizing any remaining funds from this fiscal year. Watson seconds, approved 7-0.
Much discussion followed regarding supporting GAW's request to council. Sewell moves to support
GAW requesting $13,000 of contingency funds from City Council. Snuffer seconds, approved 7-0.
E. Consideration and possible action to accept a sculpture donation from artist Ho Baron. —Amanda
Still, Arts and Culture Coordinator. Still explained that it would cost the City roughly $1,175 to
transport and install in COG, if donation is accepted. Board proposed reaching out to Mickie Avery
ask for her support accepting the donation. If Avery is not interested, board members suggested
asking Avery for a referral to someone who may be willing to help with this piece either monetarily or
via transportation of the piece to Georgetown. After some discussion, Still will reach out to Mickie
Avery and Sewell will approach Novak to inquire about sponsoring a Ho Baron donation. Next
meeting Still and Sewell will provide updates. No action taken.
F. Consideration and possible action to donate a portion of the old Recreation Center playscape mural
to the Georgetown Citizen Memorial Association. —Amanda Still, Arts and Culture Coordinator.
Amanda worked with Kimberley Garrett the Parks and Recreation department and Paulette Taylor
with GCCMA regarding the former playscape mural. Taylor would like GCCMA to take ownership of
the mural if the City is willing to donate. Following brief discussion, Fleming moves and Sewell
seconds to donate the playscape mural to GCCMA. Approved 7-0.
G. Consideration and possible action to approve the Arts Respond Pro'ect TCA grant application. —
Amanda Still, Arts and Culture Coordinator. City staff need support from the Arts and Culture Board
to request permission from City Council to apply for Texas Commission on the Arts grant. The
application requests funding for the Preserving History mural. Watson moves to support the TCA
application and request to City Council. Sewell seconds. Approved 7-0. The Preserving History
mural will be located on the back of City Hall and adjacent to the Shotgun House.

H. Consideration and possible action to select submissions for the 2019-2020 Sculpture Tour. —
Amanda Still, Arts and Culture Coordinator. Still gave an overview of her meeting with the Parks and
Recreation employees responsible for installing the Sculpture Tour pieces each year. Still reviewed
the disqualified pieces with the board and reminded them to rate the remaining submissions before
next meeting. At the board members' request, Still will find out if Rose Mallow is a functional bench
and ask the Parks department to reconsider Canis Major. Still will suggest locations based on
ratings next meeting when the official vote takes place. No action taken.
Consideration of the Arts and Culture Coordinator's monthly report. — Amanda Still, Arts and Culture
Coordinator. Still discussed the monthly report with the board, as provided in the agenda packet,
regarding the following topics:
a. Brown Bag Lunch- Sept. 24 @ noon.
b. Public art projects: sculpture tour (rack cards, scavenger hunt/QR Codes), City Hall gallery,
Preserving History mural and events in February 2020.
c. Utility box for 8th & Austin Avenue -Still asked board members to vote on which EVHS
submission should go on the next utility box wrap. Sewell moves to select "Cloudy Day" by
Kayla Moore on 8th St. & Austin Ave. utility box. Wilde seconds, approved 7-0.
J. Consideration and possible action regarding future meeting dates. — Jane Estes, Board Chair. The
next meeting will occur as regularly scheduled on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 4:30 P.M. There
will also be a special meeting on September 13 in the library's Classroom 211 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
for strategic planning. No action taken.
