HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_ARTAB_01.15.2019Minutes of the meeting of the Arts and Culture Board City of Georgetown, Texas January 15, 2019 The Arts and Culture Board met on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. in the Small Conference Room of Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8th Street, Georgetown, TX. PRESENT: Jane Estes, Susie Flatau, Tim Fleming, Laura Sewell, Sharon Snuffer, and Carol Watson. STAFF PRESENT: Eric Lashley — Library Services Director, Lawren Weiss -Administrative Assistant ABSENT: Linda Wilde Call to order at 4:31 pm A. Citizens wishing to address the Board. — Jane Estes, Board Chair. None were present. No action required. B. Announcements regarding arts and culture. -Jane Estes, Board Chair. Updates from City staff and board members on the following topics: • Southwestern University: o Instrument sale o Concerts begin January 29 o Brown Symposium, February 27-28 at Sarofim School of Fine Arts o Heathers: The Musical begins March 1 • Georgetown Art Works: o Atelier Dojo Faculty Show, well attended artist talk o Georgetown Art Works has a new president and treasurer. o Membership renewed with the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce. • July 18-There will be a Chamber event after-hours at the Art Center. o Planning for a series of mini -fundraisers throughout the year that will feature live music. o Local art groups utilizing the studio space for meetings such as Williamson County Art Guild and Watercolorists of Williamson County. o GAW hopes to rent the Artist Studios on the second floor, beginning in March. Renters will be required to be members of the Art Center and volunteer as well. o Four Southwestern University interns are assisting with various tasks. • Georgetown ISD: • Georgetown High School presents the Addams Family • East View High School presents the Newsies. Corey Cott (who was part of the original cast of Newsies) has been working with the student cast. • GISD's fundraising event • Texans for the Arts -Susie, Tim and Eric attending Arts Advocacy Day on February 5 • Lark & Owl soft opening in February Curly Clark exhibit at the library No action required. C. Consideration and possible action to approve minutes from the December 18, 2018 meetin . —Jane Estes, Chair. No discussion necessary. Motion by Sewell; second by Watson to approve the December 2018 minutes as distributed. Approved 6-0 (Wilde absent). D. Consideration and possible action to select grant proposals for arts and culture events taking -place April -September 2019. —Eric Lashley, Library Director and Lawren Weiss, Administrative Assistant. After much discussion, motion by Watson; second by Fleming to award grant applicants as follows • $3,000 to Georgetown Art Works • $2,890 to Georgetown Festival of the Arts • $2,670 to Georgetown ISD Theatre Department • $2,450 to Texas Bach Festival • $2,100 to Georgetown Symphony Society • $2,000 to Williamson County Symphony Orchestra • $1,950 to Georgetown Dance Project • $1,540 to SU Native • $1,400 to The Williamson Museum Motion approved 6-0 (Wilde absent). E. Consideration and possible action regardin_q future arts and culture grant proaram. —Eric Lashley, Library Director. After discussing the current process and time frames for the grant program, the board decided not to make changes at this time. No action taken. F. Update on vacant Arts and Culture Coordinator position. —Eric Lashley, Library Director. Lashley reported that there were 50 applicants for the Arts and Culture Coordinator position. An interview is scheduled for this Friday. The board discussed the need for a full-time arts and culture staff member and Lashley reported that he will bring that request to Council next fiscal year, along with a request for more Hotel Occupancy Tax revenue to be allotted for arts and culture. No action required. G. Review of Library Director's monthly report. —Eric Lashley, Library Director. Lashley gave updates on the following City projects: • The new City Hall building opened January 22. • Parking garage concepts & meeting with Eric Johnson about project next door to the former council chambers building. • Utility Box project is on hold until further notice. Animal Shelter mural project ■ Joint meeting between the Arts and Culture Advisory Board and Library Advisory Board to discuss the City Center outdoor spaces. • Call for art 2020 ends January 31 for Georgetown Art Center. H. Consideration and ossible action regardinq future meeting dates. —Jane Estes, Chair. The next meeting will continue as regularly scheduled on Tuesday, February 19 at 4:30 p.m. Motion by Snuffer; second by Sewell to adjourn the meeting. Approved 6-0 (Wilde absent).
