HomeMy WebLinkAboutParks Maintenance Foreman -Turf ManagerPage 1 of 2 City of Georgetown JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Parks Maintenance Foreman – Turf Manager Effective Date: 10/01/2012 FLSA Category: Non-exempt Revision Date: 04/10/2014 SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Parks Superintendent, supervises assigned staff and participates in the maintenance of the athletic fields, the mowing of parks, and the maintenance of the trail systems. Maintains all of the park irrigation systems. Determines ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Recommends for hires, supervises, trains, and develops staff through review of performance data, conferences, training and performance review.  Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and participates in the work of assigned crew.  Conducts routine inspections of irrigation and sprinkler systems to detect problems and maintain irrigation system.  Programs electronic controllers computer systems to maintain water efficiency of irrigation and sprinkler systems.  Determines water usage and fertilizer needs based on soil and plant types.  Issues work orders; makes judgment pertaining equipment and material/supply needs to complete assigned duties.  Maintains inventory and orders parts, supplies, materials and equipment; researches parts; secures bids as necessary and confers with contractors and suppliers.  Operates equipment such as mowers, tractors, sandpro, aerator, tiller, forklift and topdresser.  Oversees and/or applies herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers to athletic fields, park grounds and trails.  Performs routine equipment inspections and repairs to ensure equipment is properly operational.  Oversees and performs repairs on facilities—athletic fields, fences, volleyball nets, basketball goals, tennis nets, etc.  Trains employees in the operations of various tools and equipment and construction and repair practices and procedures.  Performs other duties as e assigned to assist with special events, etc.  Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines High school diploma or equivalent. Five years of full-time experience in turf grass and landscape management. Two years of the required experience must have been in a supervisory or lead capacity. OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Agriculture (Plant & Soil Science) or related field. Two years of full-time experience in turf grass and landscape management. One year of the required experience must have been in a supervisory or lead capacity. OR Any combination of experience, education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills or abilities. Knowledge of:  Irrigation systems.  Turf grass management.  Trails Management.  Sports field management.  Proper use of chemicals (herbicides/pesticides). Page 2 of 2  Parks and recreational facility maintenance, repair, and construction methods and practices.  Occupational safety and health rules, regulations, practices and procedures.  Supervisory methods and practices.  City policies and procedures.  Landscaping principles and practices. Skill in:  Making plumbing, electrical, carpentry and masonry repairs.  Welding.  Light machinery operation.  installation, programming, and operation of weather-based and soil moisture-based controllers  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.  Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.  Understanding and following oral and written instructions.  Reading memos, instructions, warning labels, road signs, professional publications, manuals and textbooks.  Preparing orders and reports for superintendent, chemical records and inspection reports.  Measuring and mixing cleaning agents, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, area, and irrigation-related calculations.  Planning and organizing priorities and seasonal timing of maintenance practices.  Supervising and directing employees. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Class C Texas driver's license. State of Texas Pesticide Applicator License PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Exposure to weather extremes, especially the sun, exposed to pesticides.
