Manages systems for LAN, WAN, and storage area network (SAN) support as well as servers, network routing and switching technologies, and cable plant. Manages wireless access systems. Participates in short and long-term strategic planning. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Analyzes needs and resources to plan and implement effective, efficient networks and systems.  Directs the proper use of all network and system equipment.  Collaborates with Facilities Management and other departments for design and implementation of new network systems.  Oversees technical support resolving local area network (LAN) problems, TCP/IP network services, and Cisco networking systems and devices such as routers, switches, ATAs, IP telephones, and storage area network (SAN) system.  Oversees the budget process for network and contract services for Network Operations and monitors approved budget.  Manages fiber facilities and infrastructure and copper cable plant. Configures, implements, and maintains VMWare and Windows server systems, including network backup, file, print, remote access, and application services.  Monitors and manages the security, reliability, and integrity of all systems.  Monitors performance of network and computer systems.  Maintains security and facilities management for data center.  Monitors and assists team members to troubleshoot problems with network connectivity, system operation.  Maintains inventory of network hardware and software  Maintains accurate records of system configurations and upgrades, records for operations and maintenance, performance measurement, and procurement of network equipment.  Leads infrastructure design and enhancement projects.  May provide backup support for the City’s VOIP phone system.  May provide backup direct support for the above systems if the appropriate team member is not available.  Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, training and Experience Guidelines Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any computer-intensive discipline. Five years of full-time experience in network design, system and server implementation, and management. OR Any equivalent combination of experience, education or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. One year of additional full-time experience may be substituted for 30 semester hours of the required education with a maximum substitution of two years. Knowledge of:  Wide area network (WAN) and local area network (LAN) design, implementation, and management; VMWare, Windows server administration. Page 2 of 2  Storage Area Network (SAN) technologies  Wireless network technologies  Fiber network facilities  Client/server architecture  Telephone and communications systems.  Current on applicable technology trends Skill in:  Reading and understanding technical manuals, policies and procedures, system documentation  Writing clear, accurate, timely documentation.  Writing clear, concise memos in non-technical terminology to brief managers, supervisors  Performing arithmetic calculations of computer or network capacity  Making simple projections and forecasts  Exercising sound judgment in interpretations and decisions.  Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers, clients, citizens, vendors  Handling of information restricted to specific persons.  Establishing and maintaining procedures for proper operation of the network and computer systems. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Valid Texas Driver’s License One of the following required: Network + or Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) Additional Certifications preferred: Certified Cisco Network Administrator (CCNA) Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, crouching, bending, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls. Extended periods with a computer, display monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Climbing ladders, entering crawl spaces to check wiring, lifting equipment for installation in rack mounts
