Members Present: Christy Hullum Chair, Mike Simpson (acting Secretary), Mary Treuter, Jensen Young and Jackie Carey Members Absent: Keith Fruge, Patty Eason Staff Present: Shawn Gunnin Minutes Regular Meeting Guests Present: Jamal O’Neil Meeting called to order at 6:07 p.m. by Christy Hullum. 1. Citizens comments – none. Guest Jamal O’Neil is a reporter for the Williamson County Sun newspaper. 2. Approval of minutes from May Advisory Board meeting – Motion was made to approve with corrections by Mary Treuter, second by Jackie Carey and approved unanimously. 3. Animal Services statistical and analytical report for the months of June 2010 and July 2010 – Jackie Carey reviewed the reports for June 2010. No adoptable animals were euthanized in June. The number of cat in inventory is still very high. Shelter staff and volunteers conducted two (2) adoption events. Staff is investigating getting a spot at the Farmer’s Markets. Improvements on fencing in the dog play yards. The Shelter is recognizing a generous donor family by naming the cat adoption room for the Ellison family. July recorded a 30% increase in cat impounds year to date over last year. The city hired two (2) part-time kennel techs and is conducting staff training for disaster preparation for hosting animals from another Gulf storm evacuation. Art For Animals fundraising in progressing for the end of October event. Officers for the Friends of the Georgetown Animal Shelter have been selected. Number of cats with diarrhea caused concern. Investigation identified many of the cats were infected with tritrichomonas (commonly referred to as T foetus). This parasite has traditionally been identified as a cause of reproductive disease in cattle. It infects the large intestine and can cause prolonged and intractable diarrhea. Dr Young provided great assistance in diagnosis and finding medicines for treatment. The expensive medicines, paid out of donations, were used in an experiment to determine treatability in the shelter environment. Fifteen (15) of 22 cats responded to treatment to reduce diarrhea. Further investigation reports likely relapse in 4 to 9 months and all remain contagious. Cats identified with tritrichomonas are considered un-adoptable. Additional investigation for best treatment, impact on shelter policies, and possible public education are future efforts planned. 4. Discussion and possible action about Animal Shelter monthly report statistical reporting The vendor for the shelter reporting software will come to the shelter September 8, 9, and 10. If any changes to the reports are desired, the changes need to be identified before this training session. 5. Discussion about Animal Shelter staffing Jackie Carey reported hiring 2 part-time kennel tech with a third part-time tech approved for the 2010/2011 fiscal year, funded from the spay-neuter budget allocation available thanks to the volunteer vet. Staff changes in the last three months have been well received by shelter and animal services staffs Motion to adjourn made by Mary, second by Dr. Young, passed unanimously.
