County

approve
with corrections by Mary Treuter, second by Jackie Carey and approved unanimously.
3. Animal Services statistical and analytical report for the months of June 2010
and July
2010 – Jackie Carey reviewed the reports for June 2010. No adoptable animals were
euthanized in June. The number of cat in inventory is still very high. Shelter staff and
volunteers conducted two (2) adoption events. Staff is investigating getting a spot at the
Farmer’s Markets. Improvements on fencing in the dog play yards. The Shelter is
recognizing
a generous donor family by naming the cat adoption room for the Ellison family.
July recorded a 30% increase in cat impounds year to date over last year. The city hired
two
(2) part-time kennel techs and is conducting staff training for disaster preparation for
hosting
animals from another Gulf storm evacuation. Art For Animals fundraising in progressing
for the
end of October event. Officers for the Friends of the Georgetown Animal Shelter have
been
selected.
Number of cats with diarrhea caused concern. Investigation identified many of the cats
were
infected with tritrichomonas (commonly referred to as T foetus). This parasite has
traditionally
been identified as a cause of reproductive disease in cattle. It infects the large intestine
and
can cause prolonged and intractable diarrhea.
Dr Young provided great assistance in diagnosis and finding medicines for treatment.
The
expensive medicines, paid out of donations, were used in an experiment to determine
treatability in the shelter environment. Fifteen (15) of 22 cats responded to treatment to
reduce
diarrhea. Further investigation reports likely relapse in 4 to 9 months and all remain
contagious. Cats identified with tritrichomonas are considered un-adoptable. Additional
investigation for best treatment, impact on shelter policies, and possible public
education are
future efforts planned.
4. Discussion and possible action about Animal Shelter monthly report statistical
reporting
The vendor for the shelter reporting software will come to the shelter September 8, 9,
and 10.
If any changes to the reports are desired, the changes need to be identified before this
training
session.
5. Discussion about Animal Shelter staffing
Jackie Carey reported hiring 2 part-time kennel tech with a third part-time tech
approved for
the 2010/2011 fiscal year, funded from the spay-neuter budget allocation available
thanks to
the volunteer vet. Staff changes in the last three months have been well received by
shelter
and animal services staffs
Motion to adjourn made by Mary, second by Dr. Young, passed unanimously.
Meeting adjourned by Christy Hullum at 7:09 p.m.
