Adopted10yearsago,the DowntownMasterPlanistheCity’s guidingframeworkfornewdevelop- mentandredevelopmentinthe DowntownOverlayDistrict.The planguidesstreetandstreetscape projects,wayfindingsigns,andnew development. Mosquitosfromsixlocations aretrappedeachweekbya CityofGeorgetownemploy- eeandtransportedbyHealth Districtemployeestothe TexasDepartmentofState HealthServiceslabinAustin. Theweeklytestingcontinues throughthesummer. TheCityalsoisusinglarvicidedisks indrainagepondsandotherareas withstandingwatertokillmosquito larvaebeforetheyhatchtotheadult insect. Inthepast,theCity’stransportation departmentsprayedapesticidetokill adultmosquitosinpublicparksand, yearsago,inresidentialareas.The newmosquitotrappingandtesting programdevelopedinthepastyearis targetedtoidentifyareaswithmos- quitosthatcarrytheWestNilevirus. Ifmosquitosfromanareatestposi- tiveforthevirus,additionalstepscan betaken,suchassearchesforstand- ingwater,increaseduseoflarvicides, oradditionalpublicinformation aboutreducingbreedingareasand theriskofexposure.Iftestingshows significantlyincreasedexposurerisk totheWestNilevirus,thenground- basedpesticidefoggingoraerialpes- ticidesprayingcanbeconsidered. Thisprogramisonlyoneelementin reducingtheriskfromWestNile virus.Residentsplayanimportant roleandcan“FighttheBite”by drainingwaterfromflowerpotsor otherreservoirs,dressinginlong pantsandsleeveswhenoutdoors, reducingoutsideactivityatduskor dawn,andusingDEETbugspray.
