Minutes
Regular Meeting
The Animal Shelter Advisory Board of the City of Georgetown, Texas, met on Thursday, April 20, 2006.
Meeting called to order at 6:10 p.m. by Chair, Shawn Gunnin.
1. Citizen comments – none.
2. March 2006 minutes – Motion by Ken Finn to accept the minutes as presented. Second, Debbie
Frase. Motion passed unanimously.
3. Election of Secretary – Discussed duties of secretary. Postponed election until May meeting.
4. Report from Shelter Director – Finn reported that they are continuing to work on revising Standard
Operating Procedures (SOPs) and preparing for kitten season. Volunteer hours were up significantly.
5. HSUS Task Force Update – Frase reported that the task force has broken down into sub-committees
to address all the sections of the HSUS report and are meeting regularly.
6. Discussion and possible action about long and short-term goals for the Animal Shelter --
Referring to the goals developed in previous meetings, Board members discussed ideas for implementing
the goals.
Ideas to help achieve the three goals of increasing community awareness and thus increasing adoptions
and decreasing euthanizations:
·Work with PetsMart and other locations to display high-quality signs with shelter information.
·Talk to the staff at other shelters in Williamson County to propose a rotating series of columns for
the Austin American Statesman, County section.
·Update Shelter brochure for distribution.
·Consider working with GAO to coordinate door-to-door distribution of flyers with key information
(about pet licenses or spaying/neutering, for example); church groups or Boy Scout troops may be willing
to help.
·Continue to use the educational PowerPoint presentation in local schools. Seek funding for laptop
to take to schools for presentations. Work with Superintendent to promote the program to all Georgetown
schools.
·Add another adoption event per month (already completed).
Finn will prepare a document that outlines his vision for the future, as it relates to the animal population of
Georgetown.
7. Discussion and possible action about the next educational column for the newspaper – Erica
Haley completed a detailed article about heartworm. Jackie will talk to the Sun to explain our goal for the
column: that it be a monthly feature with regular placement. If this is not appealing to them, the Advisory
Board may try a different approach, such as submitting items for the utility newsletter and/or approaching
other shelter directors within the County to alternate submitting articles to the Austin American Statesman
for its County section
8. Discussion and possible action on approval of revisions of Animal Services Standard Operating
Procedures – No newly revised SOPs to review at this meeting. Item tabled for future meetings.
Gunnin moved to adjourn, Frase seconded. Meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
