Members Present: Charles Brashear, Chuck Bridges, Daniel Dance, Katherine Kainer, Keith Fruge, Robert Johnson, Robert Palko Members Absent: Staff Present: Kimberly Garrett, Jill Kellum Minutes Regular Meeting 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm. 2. Roll Call 3. Presentation by Parks and Recreation Summer Intern - Claire Freelove Claire Freelove, the Georgetown Parks and Recreation Summer Intem gave a presentation of all the different events and activities she participated in during her summer internship. Robert Johnson asked what the biggest surprise was for her during her internship. Claire Freelove stated she worked a lot with aquatics and never worked with aquatics before. She stated her assumption of aquatics was; you have a pool, some lifeguards, you teach them CPR and you put them out there. She stated she learned from Stephanie Darimont that it is not easy, the lifeguards are well trained and water is the most dangerous recreational pieces of equipment. Claire Freelove was asked by a board member if she would consider working for the City of Georgetown. Claire Freelove said she feels the City of Georgetown has a great program and she would like to come back. She was impressed with the facilities and the programs that are offered. 4. Staff Updates a. Creative Playscape Kimberly Garret stated the staff from Baker Aicklen and the parks department t„ toured playgrounds in the DFW area on July 24 to gather information and ideas for the Creative Playscape redesign. Staff also met with Baker Aicklen on a Monday, August 5 to go over design ideas and concepts. They have incorporated the children's charrettes and public input. They are looking at the landscape and trees to see how the design will fit the area. After a design is created another public meeting will take place. The designers are looking at incorporating Georgetown landmarks and a history of Georgetown and the playscape. A meeting the first week of September will be held to go over preliminary concepts and designs with the board. b. San Gabriel River Trail Extension Kimberly Garrett stated that today the city closed on the property behind Chautauqua Park. Kimberly Garrett stated all the permits have been received and the bidding documents are being prepared. Once bids are received, the board will approve the contractor's fee before going to council for final approval. End of Summer Pool Schedule Kimberly Garrett stated the following is the pool schedule for the end of the season. This schedule is necessary due to lifeguards going back to college and pre- season sports. River Ridge, Tennis Center & Village Pools: Open through August 11 Recreation Center Outdoor Splash Pool: Open through August 24. Will reopen for one day only August 31. Williams Drive Pool: Open through August 25. Will reopen August 31- Monday, September 2. d. State Guard Games Kimberly Garrett stated a team of four lifeguards - Kate Krause, Madi Smith, Aaron Duke and Hunter Boyd — represented the City of Georgetown as Team Code Red Cross at the State Lifeguard Competition held in Corpus Christi on July 24. These individuals represented the City in a fantastic showing which garnered a second overall finish, coming in only behind Kerrville. Competition was tough as the City of Georgetown faced 12 strong teams from the Woodlands, Frisco, McKinney, Cedar Park, Conroe, Schlitterbahn and Summerland. Teams competed in four different areas: CPR, First Aid, Spinal Scenario and a group scenario. To get to the state competition the team had to qualify by placing 1st —3rd overall in one of the four regional competitions. Regional competitions typically have anywhere from 12 -35 teams competing. The City of Georgetown Code Red Cross team came in 1st place overall at the Central Texas Lifeguard Competition held in New Braunfels on July 15 to earn their spot at the state competition. Congratulations to these four individuals on a job well done! e. 2012/2013 CIP Update Kimberly Garrett presented an updated CIP report. f. Garey Park Request for Qualifications Kimberly Garrett stated staff is working to complete the Request for Qualifications for Design of Garey Park that will be sent out to interested Landscape Architect/Engineering Firms as we look toward designing Garey Park. We will ask that two parks board members and two city council members be on the selection committee along with Mr. Garey. The review will take place during September. The request for qualifications will be posted in the paper fA N August 11 and August 18 . The selection committee will be reviewing proposals and interviewing the companies. u g. City Council workshop on September 10 regarding Aquatic Master Plan and Playscape Kimberly Garrett stated the Aquatic Master Plan presentation and information on the Playscape will be presented to city council. 5. Discussion and possible action to appoint two Parks and Recreation Board members to the Garey Park Architectural Design selection committee. Kimberly Garrett stated the proposals are due September 5th and they will be distributed to the committee on September 9 . The committee will have a couple of weeks to review the proposals and then the companies will be reviewed. The committee will look through the applications and selecting the firm who will be doing the construction plans. The committee will include 2 councilmembers, 2 parks board members, Kimberly Garrett Eric Nuner and Mr. Garey or his son. Keith Fruge and Robert Johnson volunteered to participate on the selection committee. Motion made by Daniel Dance, second by Robert Palko to appoint Keith Fruge and Robert Johnson to the Garey Park Architectural Design selection committee. Approved 7 -0 6. Discussion and possible action regarding September Parks and Recreation Board meeting. m The meeting will be conducted on the regular date of Thursday, September 12 . Update from the Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Id There was not a monthly meeting and the annual meeting will be September 23 in the Community Room at 7 pm. S. Approve minutes from the July 13, 2013 meeting Motion made by Keith Fruge, second by Robert Palko to approve minutes from the Ih July 13 , 2013 meeting. 9. Adjourn Motion made by Katherine Kainer to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 7:20 pm.
