Based on the recommendation from the 17- member Committee, the City Council voted in August to place these items on the Nov. 2 ballot. Open House community meet- ings about the proposed facilities are being planned for October. Check the City of Georgetown website at www.georgetown.org for details. From the homepage, go to the “Features” section and click on “Facilities Bond Program.” Proposition 1: The issuance of $9,800,000 tax bonds for a new City library. Features: Approx. 54,000 square feet Space for library collection of 265,000 books, audiobooks, CDs, magazines, and other materials 5,000 square-foot meeting room to accommodate 500 people (with room divider to allow for two events) Computer classroom Six study rooms Designated area for children’s activities and performances Energy-efficient design with rainwater collection system and solar panels for outdoor lighting (cost permitting) Existing library to be converted to City office space if bond passes Projected completion in 2007 Proposition 2: The issuance of $10,000,000 tax bonds for the expansion and renovation of the existing City Recreation Center. Features: Approx. 42,000 square-foot addition (for a facility total of 60,000 square feet) Teen and senior activity room, approx. 10,000 square feet Second gym with area for seating Indoor competition-length lap pool Indoor exercise/physical therapy pool Changing rooms for pools Outdoor family pool Outdoor activity area Projected completion in 2010 Proposition 3: The issuance of $1,600,000 tax bonds for the expansion and renovation of the Community Center in San Gabriel Park. That’s just what will happen with the first-ever citywide read- ing and discussion program called Georgetown Reads! Through Oct. 15, vote for your “one city, one book” choice. The five candidates are: The Tortilla Curtain, by T. Coraghessan Boyle (fiction) The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien (fiction) Peace Like a River, by Leif Enger (fiction) Guests of the Sheik, by Elizabeth Fernea (memoir) Ava’s Man, by Rick Bragg (memoir) You may vote online using the library’s web page: (www.georgetowntex.org), or in person at the library. On Aug. 31, Georgetown Mayor Gary Nelon cut the ribbon on the new turnaround at Williams Drive and I-35. The proj- ect was funded by the City’s 0.5 percent sales tax for new roads, as well as by funds from the Texas Department of Transportation, the Rivery retail center developer, and other City funds. Officials on hand for the opening included TXDOT Austin District Engineer Robert Daigh, State Representative Dan Gattis, TXDOT Georgetown Area Engineer John Wagner, Georgetown Mayor Pro Tem Doug Smith, and Georgetown Transportation Enhancement Corporation Chair Henry Carr (Carr is also a Georgetown City Councilmember). DOWN TOWN Happenings New Animal Shelter Hours CORRECTION Mon. - Fri. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sun. closed Bring the kids to San Gabriel Park on Oct. 28 for the 10th annual Haunted Hayride, sponsored by the Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department. Last year, nearly 1,000 people came to this popular autumn event. Hayrides will begin in front of the Community Center from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets will be available until 8 p.m. only. Tickets for the Hayrides are $2 for ages 6 – 13 and $3 for those 14 and up. Children 5 and under are free. A carnival inside the Community Center with games, food, and much more is also part of the Hayride event. The carnival lasts from 6 to 9 p.m., and there is no charge to enter. Each booth charges a fee to participate. For details, call the Georgetown Parks and Recreation info line at 930-3595. Country Books, Cianfrani’s, Starbucks, The Book Shelf, Dog-Eared Books, the Southwestern University Bookstore, the Southwestern University Library, the Georgetown Recreation Center, and the Sun City Fitness Center. The winner will be announced Nov. 1 and the library will have multiple copies of the selected book soon after. A kickoff event is scheduled for Nov. 11 and discussion groups and other related events will start in January 2005. The Bike Rodeo includes a bicycle riding course, free bike inspections, helmet inspections, bicycle safety information, prizes, and more. The Bike Rodeo will be held on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Georgetown High School parking lot. Organized by the Georgetown Police Department and Police Explorer Post 152.
