The society is a state affiliate of the National Recreation and Parks Association. Georgetown was judged as the top program in its category, which includes Texas cities with popula- tions in the 20,001 to 50,000 range. Georgetown won the state Gold Medal twice previously in 1993 and 1998, and won the national Gold Medal in 1999. Summer camp registration for Camp Goodwater, camps at the Community Center Renovation Mayor Gary Nelon and Kimberly Garrett, parks and recreation director The renovation of the Community Center in San Gabriel Park transformed a utilitarian building into a showplace suitable for formal banquets. The facility is used for craft or garden shows, fairs, family reunions, and nonprofit fundraisers. The project was designed by Eleven Thirteen Architects here in Georgetown. Architect Tom Nichols says that the raised roof with a vaulted ceiling was meant to give the space openness. Natural light was dramatically increased by adding a clerestory, which is a row of windows below the roofline. “It literally separated the roof from the walls,” says Nichols. The new roof is supported by steel columns rather than the existing limestone walls. A new entrance atrium in light-brown sandstone gives the build- ing warmth and texture. Double-paned windows, insulation, and a new heating and cooling system increase the building’s energy efficiency.
