The Light and Water Works plant was built 100 years ago, marking the beginning of communi- ty-owned utilities in Georgetown. The building currently houses the Georgetown Police Department. The cost of the ornament is $20 and all proceeds will be used for the “Light Up the Square” campaign to help add more holiday lighting in downtown. The ornaments can be purchased at the Visitor Information Center at 101 E. Seventh Street. The annual ornament sale is a project of the Georgetown Main Street Program. Bring an unwrapped toy for Blue Santa to the Christmas Stroll Parade at noon on Saturday, December 3. Toys will be collected along the parade route. Each year, children in hundreds of families receive toys from Blue Santa, a program of the Georgetown Police Department. New, unwrapped toys also can be brought to the Georgetown Police Department or to donation barrels at businesses in Georgetown. Bring Toys for Blue Santa to Stroll Parade Collectible Christmas Ornament When the City of Georgetown’s 9-1-1 emergency operators need to contact a neighborhood about an immediate threat to human life or property, such as a threatening wild- fire or a fuel tanker spill, they can use the Emergency Notification System to quickly send a voice mes- sage to thousands of phones. This is an update to an article on this topic in the November issue. If you only have a mobile phone, or if your home phone service is with Suddenlink or another voice-over-IP provider, then your phone number may not be in the 9-1-1 database. You can register a phone number at http://wireless.capcog.org. The cell phone registry and the 9-1-1 emer- gency communications database are provided by the Capital Area Council of Governments or CAPCOG. If you have questions or want to register a number by phone, call the CAPCOG Homeland Security Division at (512) 916-6035. Emergency Notices to Your Phone Registration for Georgetown Parks and Recreation co-ed youth basketball is November 12 through January 7. The fee is $35 for Georgetown resi- dents and $45 for nonresidents. Leagues are for youth pre-K through 7th grade. Games are played on Saturdays at the Georgetown Recreation Center starting on January 14 for 10 weeks. Volunteer coaches are needed. For details, call the Recreation Center at (512) 930-3596. Candlelight Service December 1 A holiday tradition in the chapel at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Southwestern University. The service includes carols and music from the university chorale and orchestra. Sun City Holiday Home Tour December 2 – 4 The 11th annual home tour fea- tures seven homes professionally decorated for the holidays. Tours are December 2 from 4 to 7 p.m., December 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and December 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at any of the homes during Tour hours or in advance from any Sun City Kiwanis member, at the Sun City Community Association office, at the Visitor Information Center on the Square, or at First Texas Bank in Sun City. New Year Notes Security Alarm Registration City of Georgetown residents and business owners need to register their security alarms with the Georgetown Police Department. Permit fees are $25 annually for both residential and commercial permits and includes three free false alarms per registration year. For more information or to renew a permit online, go to the alarms.georgetown.org website, or contact Georgetown Police Department records office at (512) 930-3453 or alarms@georgetown.org. City Boards and Commissions The City of Georgetown is accepting applications to fill vacant or expir- ing terms on the City’s boards or commissions. The deadline to apply for one of these volunteer positions is January 13. Terms begin in March. Information and applications are available at www.georgetown.org. Christmas Tree Recycling From January 2 through January 31, Christmas trees will be accepted at the City of Georgetown Collection Station. Trees will be turned into garden mulch. Before you drop off your tree, please remove the tree stand and any garland, ornaments, or lights. Mulch is available, year-round, free-of-charge at the Collection Station, located at 250 W.L. Walden Drive. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For details, call Texas Disposal Systems at (512) 930-1715. Phone Book Recycling Recycle your old phone book from December 1 through January 2. Look for special containers at both HEB store locations in Georgetown. Project Re-Direct is a service provided by AT&T and HEB. Holiday Closings City offices closed Dec. 23 & 26 and Jan. 2, 2012 Regular trash and recycling pickup on Dec. 23, 26, and 30 and Jan. 2. with Santa, and Whooville with free activities for children. Symphony Society Holiday Concert December 4 The Georgetown Symphony Society presents the Temple Symphony Orchestra in its annual Holiday Concert at 4 p.m. at the Georgetown HS Klett Center for the Performing Arts. The featured work will be Handel’s Messiah, with the orchestra being joined by the Temple Symphony Chorale and the San Gabriel Chorale. A free pre- concert lecture at 3:15 p.m. Tickets ($25, $20, students $5) available starting November 21 at the Williamson County Sun, both Georgetown HEB stores, the Sun City CA office, and at the door. Georgetown Heritage SocietyHoliday Home Tour December 10 & 11 The home tour features a diverse selection of beautifully restored his- toric homes in Georgetown lovingly decorated for the season. Tours are noon to 5 p.m. each day. Tickets for $15 on sale online at www.GeorgetownHeritageSociety.com or in advance at The Georgetown Antique Mall, Diva, The Escape, the Visitor Information Center, and Sun City Community Association Office. Breakfast with Santa December 17 Annual pancake breakfast with Santa Claus at the Community Center, 445 E. Morrow Street, from 8 to 11 a.m. Proceeds benefit needy families in Georgetown.
