Minutes
Regular Meeting
1. Citizens Comments: none
2. Approval of Minutes: Max Mixson, second Jerry Hammerlun.
Minutes from the September meeting were approved.
3. Presentation of Animal Services Statistics: Jackie Carey. There were 62 animals adopted
in September, 23 animals were euthanized. The percentage euthanized for September
was 10%. We are at 15% year to date for euthanasia. Intakes were up 33% since the year
2009. Our euthanasia rate is down 14% and adoptions are up 21%. The shelter has
achieved 8 months of no-kill status - 10% or less euthanized animals.
4. Discussion on changes to the way the shelter is reporting stats. Max Mixson stated that
the stats for next month October will be an altered report. Software Chameleon has
several issues again but the shelter is moving toward using Asilomar Accord for better
reporting and more defined categories and also seeing if Chameleon can offer better
reporting capabilities.
5. Discussion and possible action on requirement of retail pet sales. Discussion of what was
involved with registering as breeder to be part of the approved pet sales. Establishing
restrictions and policies that ensure that another "Pet Land" type of business would not be
allowed. Question on time frame for moving ordinance forward. Jerry Hammerlun stated that
he would email Bridget to get on the schedule.
6. Discussion and possible action to capture shelter capacity and utilization metrics. Mike
Simpson presented a capacity spreadsheet showing that on several days every month that we
had doubling up of dogs in adoptable kennels. In July the shelter was at 120% beyond capacity
for dogs. Cats were beyond capacity in June at 114.9%. After review and discussion of
spreadsheet it was decided that the spreadsheet would need to be recalculated to include the
correct capacity numbers for both cats and dogs. Importance of presenting actual numbers to
project future capacity needs. Did we feel that this information should be included with the
monthly stats report? The number of days an animal spends in the shelter would be necessary
to determine growth needs. How do we capture the dogs that are adoptable but due to space
are not in the DA kennels? Discussion to find another software program that would better fit
the growing needs of the shelter or upgrading the existing Chameleon program. It was
recommended that we as a group define the top priority issues for the shelter and move
forward once these issues are identified. Suggestion of a possible store front location for the
months of November and December for viewing of adoptable animals and use of fire stations.
What other information from the Jackie's monthly report would add value to the capacity
report? We will continue discussion at the next meeting.
7. Open discussion of Animal Shelter and Animal Services operations and marketing.
Researching Smart Phone applications for the shelter. Facebook represents challenges in itself
and would require daily monitoring. Suggestion that we email a thank you to Erin McDonald
for all her hard work on the shelter's web site. Discussion of the operating hours at the shelter.
Are they adequate? Possibility of staying open until 7pm on Thursdays and opening at 11a.m
on both Saturday and Sunday. Dr. Warden's services are many more than just spaying and
neutering animals and we estimate that having him on staff has saved the city over $25,000.
The dental program has been very successful in the care and cleaning of the animal's teeth and
gums. The Dog Wash Station has been installed and operational thanks to the donation from
the Friends group.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Christine Albanese
