Thursday, July 12, 2012
The Animal Shelter Advisory Board of the City of Georgetown, Texas, met on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
Members Present: Mike Simpson (chair), Laura Hobgood-Oster (secretary), Mary Treuter, Christine
Albanese, Max Mixson
Members Absent: Jerry Hammerlun, Lyle Warden
Staff Present: Jackie Carey
Minutes
Regular Meeting
Guest Present: Diane Coker
1. Citizen Comments: none
2. Approval of minutes: Minutes from the June meeting were approved - L. Hobgood-Oster
3. Presentation of Animal Services Statistics: J. Carey
Jackie reported that the shelter is very full right now and adoptions are slow. A group is meeting
with Erin McDonald and Keith Hutchinson next week to try to determine how we can improve
visibility for the shelter. The meeting will focus on social media in particular. Laura will be
participating in a webinar on social media and shelters/rescue groups sponsored by petfinder as
well.
Jackie reported that the new ACO started. She has good credentials and is a veterinary technician
as well.
Friends of the Georgetown Animal Shelter will be funding several new pieces of equipment for
the shelter: a dog washing station, a dishwasher, a water softener.
4. Discussion and possible action on requirements of retail pet sales - L. Hobgood-Oster
Laura distributed a re-worded version of a possible retail pet sales ordinance. Diane Coker
(citizen present) joined the conversation as well, suggesting that it might be beneficial to meet
with individual City Council members. This had been suggested by Jerry Hammerlun also. It was
also suggested that we invited the members to visit the shelter.
A motion was made to invite each member of city council to visit the shelter in August and
September. It was seconded and passed unanimously.
A discussion followed regarding the schedule for the ordinance process and the board decided to
ask for a workshop with the Council in October.
Regarding the wording of the proposed ordinance, the board suggested that we limit the number of
"whereas" support statements. Laura asked that members send any suggested wording changes to
her and she will revise before the August meeting so we can forward the proposed Ordinance to the
city's attorney.
5. Discussion and possible action to capture shelter capacity and utilization metrics: M. Simpson
Discussion continued from the June meeting regarding the best use of the space in the shelter. One
aspect of this is keeping solid statistics. Jackie and Max indicated that the shelter will start using the
Asilomar Accords definitions for statistics. Max will explain these in more detail if the advisory
board is interested.
6. Discussion and possible action on list of topics proposed for public education on responsible pet
ownership: M. Simpson
The "Staycation" education point was shared with the board. It was posted on the city website
and focused on how to keep dogs safe on the 4* of July.
Several other topics, including licensing and the benefits of it, were discussed.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
