Minutes
Regular Meeting
1. Citizens Comments - none
2. Minutes from April advisory board meeting approved
3. Animal Services Status Presentation - Jackie Carey report gave a staff report (current status of
staff, including reconfiguration of kennel staff). The garage sale (sponsored by Friends of the
Shelter) grossed $6700 - the most ever for that event. This year the Red Poppy Festival yielded
very few adoptions, but still good for us to be there. The shelter continues to hold spay/neuter
clinic for cats (not as many pregnant cats this year), did another one in May - only 10
appointments (and a few walk-ins).
Jackie raised the issue of how we report our statistics - when Keith put the press release out about
no-kill, we only achieve no-kill as far as how statistics are reported (on a monthly basis or yearly
basis) because of how we report statistics. Might be worth reconsidering this. Mike asked how the
shelter does temperament tests. Jackie reported on the SAFER program for dogs. We will institute
a similar program for cats.
4. Chris reported on the status of finding a person to fill the required veterinary position for the
Board. Mary asked Dr. Koy, who had to decline, but thanked us for asking. Patty checked with Dr.
Randall who also had to decline. Jackie asked Dr. Warden, who is the staff vet at the shelter, and he
has agreed to be the veterinarian on the advisory board.
5. Laura presented the current status of the Retail Pet Sales Ordinance initiative. A small group will
meet to plan the meeting that we have requested with Paul Brandenburg. Laura will coordinate
and continue to gather examples of other ordinances.
6. Mike is working on reworking our process for keeping statistics about shelter capacity and the
different metrics that apply. He is working on it and will bring examples of reports.
7. Regarding public education on responsible pet ownership, Shawn and Jackie added a few new
information items to the website. Jackie updated us on the site. Possible educational items are rabies,
traveling, dog park etiquette, don't leave your pet in the car.
Additional items for discussion - Chris suggested more emphasis on microchipping.
Additional conversation about possible partnering with a mobile veterinarian.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:10 pm.
