Minutes
Regular Meeting
1. Citizens Comments: none
2. Approval of Minutes: L. Hobgood-Oster Minutes
from the August meeting were approved.
3. Presentation of Animal Services Statistics: S. Gunnin, M. Mixson
There were 69 animals adopted in August. 18 animals were euthanized. The percentage
euthanized was 8%, so a good month. We are at 15% year to date. Several new adoption
events in September - a major adopt-a-thon at Petsmart (held last weekend, 119 animals
adopted from the participating groups) and an adoption event coming up at Farm Supply
in Georgetown. Chameleon continues to be a challenge. The report was accepted.
4. Discussion and possible action on changes to shelter reporting: M. Mixson
Max reported that the shelter is moving to the Asilomar Accord categories for reporting
starting October 1. The categories are: healthy, treatable, rehabilitatable, unhealthy,
untreatable. A question was posed regarding Maddie's Fund and if it is still a possibility
for a funding option. Laura will gather more information and report at a later meeting.
5. Discussion and possible action on requirement of retail pet sales: L. Hobgood-Oster
Jerry and Jackie met with Bridge Chapman (city attorney). The city attorney did a
workshop for the Council going over all of the animal ordinances and needed changes.
Some Council members have visited the shelter already and more are scheduled We still
are not fully ready for a presentation of the proposed ordinance to the Council, several
members seem to be hesitant about the ordinance. We will continue discussion at the next
meeting.
6. Discussion and possible action to capture shelter capacity and utilization metrics: M.
Simpson
Mike inquired about how to house more adoptable animals viewable by the public since
there occasionally seems to be a logjam of animals in stray hold areas. Mike will continue
to provide reports of shelter utilization monthly.
7. Open Discussion of Animal Shelter and Animal Services operations and marketing: M.
Simpson
Mary asked Dr. Warden if everything was going well with his position at the shelter and
he indicated that all is fine.
Max reported that animal control was all going well. We have a solid staff of ACOs now
with the addition of Kelly.
Shawn had no additional comments.
All member of the staff present indicated that the shelter could use more volunteers.
8. Other Comments
On an upcoming agenda we need to discuss PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support
-hospice care) and GAO's changing programs.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:47 p.m.
